Description
The crew of Wendur (a barque) which struck Seven Stones. The Glasgow sailing vessel struck the southern most rock of the Seven Stones Reef while carrying grain from Plymouth, Devon. Three of the 21 crew lost their lives.
The formal inquiry, held in May 1912 in Liverpool found that:
"The Court having carefully inquired into the circumstances attending the above-mentioned shipping casualty, finds for the reasons stated in the Annex hereto, that the stranding and loss of the vessel were due to a grave error in judgment on the part of the master in attempting to navigate the channel between the Seven Stones and the Scilly Isles, for which he is hereby censured. The Court, however, desires to add that it was impressed with the honesty and straightforwardness with which, under the circumstances, the master gave his evidence."
