The Major Oak tree in Sherwood Forest (Nottinghamshire). Oak trees here are said to date from mediaeval times or even Norman times. This tree, hollow inside with room for a small group of people, is near the village of Edwinstowe. The church in the village is reputedly where Robin Hood married Maid Marion.
The caption reads: "Major Oak. Age 1,500 years. Girth 35 feet. Base 64 feet."
"The 500-year-old Major oak tree, reputed to have been Robin Hood's hideout in Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire, which was badly damaged by fire last August, has survived, experts said yesterday." (10/5/1983)
