Polwithen House was built for the banker William Bolitho about 1870. It was sold in 1902 to become the hotel.
In 1918 the Penzance Church of England High School for girls took over the premises.

The removal of the Market Cross from outside the Market House, western end now the main entrance to Lloyds Bank showing the back of the cross and the Inscription which had previously been hidden from view.
