Title
Industrial scene
Description
This image shows a workplace where wooden casks or barrels were manufactured. The eleven workers were known as Coopers. These casks were used to hold both dry and wet goods.
Casks like these were used locally in Newlyn to pack 'Cornish Pilchards'.
Most of the Coopers are wielding a hammer for knocking the wooden staves into place together with the metal securing bands. Note the sleeves rolled up.
