She had sailed from Barry in the early house of April 28th 1911, bound for Venice with 4,800 tons of coal, but when twelve hours out her chief engineer was taken seriously ill and Captain Albert Crowthers altered course for Mount's Bay to land him. As the weather was foggy, the captain steered a careful course past the Runnelstone and was almost in the bay when he made a bad mistake. A large black and white check buoy was seen bobbing in the heavy seas and was taken to be that marking Mount Mopus Ledge, between St. Micheals Mount and Porthleven. They had been confused by the mist and the rain, and a few minutes later, as the Cragoswald passed carefully to port of the buoy, there came a tremendous crash and she shuddered to a stop. Though she was going very slowly, her bows were firmly impaled and for the next four days she hung precariously on the Low Lee while salvage craft, tugs, and divers fussed about her. Twice the salvors were driven off by rough seas, but on the morning of May 2nd the Cragoswald floated free and was towed to Penzance. Five days later, escorted by tugs, she left Mount's Bay under her own steam for the repair docks at Falmouth. After seven months she was ashore again, this time in Jury's Cap, Near Dungeness, during the south-west gale which wrecked the barque Saluto in Mount's Bay. The Cragoswald spent a week on the beach before being reflected and she lasted until April 18 1917, when a German U-Boat Torpedoed her 60 miles west by south of the Bishop Rock. Account of Wreck from Cornishman Newspaper, December 9th 1911 "Watched by hundreds of spectators, the Norwegian Barque Saluto was driven ashore close to St. Michael’s Mount on Wednesday morning, and it is likely to become a total wreck. In the teeth of one of the worst gales for a quarter of a century, the crew of thirteen all told were taken off by the Newlyn Lifeboat Elizabeth and Blanche and safely landed at that port amid scenes of great enthusiasm. The Saluto is an iron Barque and hails from Christiansund. She was commanded by Captain Olsen, and carried a crew of thirteen. She was bound from London to the West Indies in ballast. She left the Thames on November 23rd, but experienced bad weather. On Friday last, when in the Bay of Biscay, the vessel sprang a leak and matters rapidly worked towards a crisis. The water mixed with the ballast and thus choked the pumps. The leak was discovered forward on the starboard side, but despite all the efforts of the crew- who tried to plug it with a sail, white lead etc.- it was found impossible to stop it and with the pumps choked, the water rapidly rose in the hold. With the weather continuing bad, the captain recognised the danger of proceeding on his voyage and on Monday he determined to make for Falmouth. Under light sail the Saluto was in the vicinity of the Lizard on Tuesday night, but the wind then increased in velocity and it was found impossible to round the headland. The wind also changed its direction, and the Saluto was driven towards the centre of the Bay. The crew could do nothing more. The signal of distress was hoisted, and they waited patiently for help from the shore. It was in this state that the Barque was observed from Mousehole at about 9.30 on Wednesday morning. The intelligence was immediately sent to Newlyn and at 9.45 the lifeboat crew was summoned by rocket. With commendable foresight the Elizabeth and Blanche had been kept afloat, and in a few minutes Coxswain T.E.Vingoe and his crew were proceeding out of the Harbour to the rescue of the doomed ship. Some three or four of the lifeboat’s regular crew were away from Newlyn on fishing duty, but there was no difficulty in obtaining volunteers. The report of the rocket attracted to the harbour and to the sea front at Penzance a big crowd of interested spectators, who watched with intense excitement the subsequent proceedings. At the time the lifeboat left the harbour one of the fiercest gales on record in the Bay was raging from the S.W., and huge seas were running. The distressed vessel was three or four miles to the South-Eastward of Mousehole, and was rapidly drifting in the direction of Cudden. Under sails the lifeboat put out, her progress being followed with no little anxiety. At one moment she would be sent to the crest of a big wave, and the next she would be lost from view in the trough of the sea. There was no faltering and steadily and quickly she reduced the distance between herself and the Barque. Those on board the latter had observed the lifeboat’s approach, and had let go both anchors, but so violent was the gale and so great the seas that one of her cables snapped and the remaining anchor failed to hold the vessel. What actually was happening when the lifeboat had drawn alongside the Barque could not be followed by those on shore, as the vessel had reached within a couple of miles of Cudden, and vision was also obstructed by the heavy rain squalls which frequently swept over the Bay, blotting out even the Barque itself. After the lapse of a short time, however, the lifeboat was seen coming away from the Barque, and as she neared the land it was seen that her human freight had been considerably augmented. Sailing splendidly she quickly reached Newlyn where a tremendous ovation was accorded her plucky crew. The sirens of all the steam craft gave vent to a triumphant peon, and the throngs on the wharfs waved their hats and shouted enthusiastically. And let it be said the plucky lifeboat- men deserved the praise which was bestowed upon them, for on all hands it is admitted it was one of the smartest rescues ever effected in the Bay. The Hansy left Sundsvall, Sweden on October 3rd 1911 with a cargo of timber and pig-iron for Melbourne and after a rough passage down Channel was caught by a hard SSW gale off the Lizard. While trying to claw off the coast she missed stays in coming about, became trapped in Housel Bay and was wrecked at Carn Table. The crew were rescued by breeches-buoy from the shore and the master, Captain Kiltvo, and the mate were later taken off by the lifeboat. Two days later, when the weather had moderated and a salvage party were able to board the wreck, they found a pig feasting on potatoes in what remained of the crew's quarters, while two goats eyed them amiably form the comfort of a bunk. For weeks after the stranding, great quantities of timber were washed out of the wreck and thankfully collected by the local fishing boats. In 1896 she was sold to B. Wencke & Company of Hamburg and her new owners seemed able to bring out her finer sailing qualities. She left Hamburg for Port Talbot in late February 1911 and loaded coal brickets for Mejillones, on the west coast of South America. The weather was so bad that she took six weeks to round Cape Horn, and later was almost wrecked at Taltal. At Mejillones, she discharged and loaded nitrates and sails for Falmouth, arriving on February 1st 1912. As an example of German Discipline, the first mate ordered four men aloft to scrape and varnish the main royal yard as she entered harbour, despite the fact that it was snowy hard. She lay at Falmouth until February 10th, when she left for Hamburg to discharge in tow of the German tug Ancona. But they had hardly got out into Falmouth bay than the strong southeasterly wind refreshed and backed. Both ships were gradually forced backwards down the coast, and despite all the tugs efforts at 9 pm the Pindos was carried broadside on to Chynhalls Point, less than half a mile from Coverack Village. The tug captain held her head to sea for some time to stop her broaching, but was eventually force to slip the hawser. Meanwhile the Coverack lifeboat had putt off, and aided by the glare of newly provided acetylene searchlights, rescued the Germans by breeches-buoy from the waveswept and listing poop deck. On February 20th, the Pindos, together with her gear and stores, was sold for £225, but later gales soon reduced her to pieces. Over the years salvage has been carried out, but parts of her masts, rigging, plates and keel still lie on the seaward side of the Chynhalls.
