Brand new motor cars were winched outboard and dropped, followed by grand pianos, crated machinery of every description, sewing machines, carpets, and other valuable items by the ton. The frightened steers joined the rest of the cargo in the sea, and assisted by the gigs whose roped the cattle alongside by their horns. At least 200 animals reached Bryher safely. A Lowestoft trawler came into St. Marys Roads with a crated motor-car on deck, having recovered it floating near the Wolf Rock. When asked what should be done with it, the Receiver of Wreck took the fishermen to the end of Hugh Town jetty and pointed out across the sound where dozens of similar crates could be seen bobbing about in the sea. By April 20th, a fleet of tugs and salvage vessels were in attendance, and the serious business of getting the ship afloat again began. The first move on the part of the Liverpool Salvage Company and the Swedish firm which was assisting them, was to build a false floor of timber in each hold at low water, caulking each seam so as to make it watertight. She scraped past the Land's End Cliffs, and though water was pumped into her holds to force her deeper into the sea, she drove on. By noon the Tripolitania was inside the Lizard and, knowing she was doomed, Captain Reppito called the crew on to the bridge and told them that he was going to beach on Loe Bar.  At full speed she surged up the coast, then the wheel was put hard rescue to arrive the Italians flung a roper over the bows and though the first man who slid down was swept away, twenty-seven others got safely ashore. During the next few ays the Tripolitania was driven farther up the bar sands, but she was little damaged and the work of refloating her began. Scores of labourers dug away the sand which continually built around her, coffer dams were erected and channels cut back to the sea.  Months passed, and she still remained on the bar. In August 1913 hopes of salvage were still good, but on November 4th a south-west gale and high spring tide destroyed a year's work in a night. By dawn she had wallowed her way 300 yeards further inshore and settled down even deeper; Tripolitania was launched on the Mersey in 1905 as the Drumgarth, for John Heron & Co of Liverpool. She later became the Lord Cromer, and in December 1911 passed to Luigi Pillagura of Genoa. Before it wrecked, the vessel was bound from Norman to Maryport with iron-ore on March 26th 1911. <br /><br />The vessel had lost her rudder and badly holed in her hull when she hit some rocks. By midnight, she had flooded from end to end and although her entire cargo of ore was dumped overboard in an attempt to lighten her, she was eventually abandoned to the sea. Occasional fog-banks impaired visibility and the lookouts had nothing more than infrequent glimpses of the shore. But the ship had passed this way dozens of times before and, confident in her course, her officers held on her full cruising speed of fourteen knots. Just after 8:00 am the Mosel ran into a heavier bank of fog and ten minutes later steamed headlong into Bass Point, directly beneath Lloyd's signal station. She was so close to the cliffs the duty signalman climbed down, jumped on to the forecastle and spoke to the captain and officers in the saloon. In no immediate danger, the passengers were ordered to pack their baggage. The Falmouth tug, Rosetta, took off the bullion, mail, and some of the saloon passengers, while a proportion of the general cargo was transferred to the tugs Victor, Kimberly, and Sylph. Soon afterwards a small fire broke out in the engine room an it was decided to abandon ship. All the passengers and crew were landed safely, the emigrants being house in the warehouse of Falmouth Dock Company. On August 11th, the Irish packet, Countess of Dublin, took the saloon passengers aboard for America, the remainder travelling on the Herman, a sister ship of the Mosel. The wreck settled lower in the sea, and at high water lay bows-on to the cliff, with the stern completely under the water. Divers sent down to examine the hull found plates torn open by the stern to about eighty feet aft, but considered the salvage was still possible. Work commenced on patching the holes but was soon stopped by ground swells, and on August 24th the Mosel broke in half. Then, at 21:30 pm it was the helmsman and not the look-out who first saw a blurred flash in the murk dead ahead. Seconds later, breakers were seen grounded on the rocks below Bass Point. Badly holed, she settled rapidly by the stern and in less than ten minutes had to be abandoned. The first distress rocket, fired from a boat by the first mate, explored almost in front of the coastguard's lookout and the Lizard and Cadgwith lifeboats were soon afloat and helping in the rescue. Next morning, when the fog lifted, the Cromdael was an awesome spectacle, poop deck under water and bows on the rocks below the high cliffs, every sail set but hanging limply from the yards in the still air. At low water, her crew boarded her and managed to recover some personal belongings and the ship's instruments. The wreck was later put up for auction but, with a ruined cargo, she was of little value apart from her sailing gear and Harris Brothers of Falmouth bought her £41, later reselling her to a third party. A week after she came ashore, the Cromdale broke up in a heavy SSW gale and very little salvage work was ever carried out on the remains. It was very foggy at the time, but the crew managed to scramble ashore, to be found the next morning by a Mr Martin, a local farmer. After striking the Crims, it was possible to climb down into Nos 2 and 3 holds and see a glimmer of sand and rock through the holes in her bottom. Captain Young of Liverpool Salvage Association set about reflecting her, and his first action was to build a false floor in No 3 hold, after which the level of water inside was reduced by compressed air and she floated clear. As she was pulled away from the rocks by tugs at 7:15 am on 27 June, her foremast fell out through the bottom. She was taken to St. Marys Road and anchored near Nut Rock, after which she went on to Southampton under tow from the tugs Linnet, Triton, and ranger and lay at anchor off Netley for many months before being broken up.
