Gusting to over 100 mph, the WSW gale caught her high-riding hull as it would saild, and by 6 A.M on Boxing Day, when the Wolf Rock was sighted, she was in grave difficulities. She scraped past the Land's End Cliffs, and though water was pumped into her holds to force her deeper into the sea, she drove on. By noon the Tripolitania was inside the Lizard and, knowing she was doomed, Captain Reppito called the crew on to the bridge and told them that he was going to beach on Loe Bar. At full speed she surged up the coast, then the wheel was put hard rescue to arrive the Italians flung a roper over the bows and though the first man who slid down was swept away, twenty-seven others got safely ashore. During the next few ays the Tripolitania was driven farther up the bar sands, but she was little damaged and the work of refloating her began. Scores of labourers dug away the sand which continually built around her, coffer dams were erected and channels cut back to the sea. Months passed, and she still remained on the bar. In August 1913 hopes of salvage were still good, but on November 4th a south-west gale and high spring tide destroyed a year's work in a night. By dawn she had wallowed her way 300 yeards further inshore and settled down even deeper; Tripolitania was launched on the Mersey in 1905 as the Drumgarth, for John Heron & Co of Liverpool. She later became the Lord Cromer, and in December 1911 passed to Luigi Pillagura of Genoa. By a coincidence, her last captain before she was sold to the Italians was Captain J.J Beckerleg of Marazion, whose home was only half a dozen mile from Loe Bar. She was originally registered in London. On January 27th 1936, she dragged her anchors in a south-west gale and wrapped herself around the tall post-and-cage beacon which marks the Gear Rocks, just off Penzance Promenade. Her crew was rescued by the lifeboat, but the Taycraig, which was in ballast for Newlyn to load road-stone, sank until her funnel and masts stood out of the water and defied all efforts to salvage her. She had been towed into Falmouth early the same day by the German tug Seefalke, having sheared the bolts of her rudder quadrant in a gale of Ushant whilst bound from Bilboa to Newport with Iron ore. After hurried repairs, she sailed the same day for Wales and two hours later was aground on the point, only sixty yards offshore, flooded fore and aft. Salvage started immediately and nearly 100 labourers were employed to remove the cargo. But she was never refloated, and eventually the owners, Messrs Constants of Cardiff, asked the Western Marine Company to break her up for scrap. At Lowland Point, there is still a huge propeller on the rocks, said to have come from her. The Ocklinge was the second steamer of Constant's lost off Cornwall, the Lyminge having been wrecked at Gurnard's Head on September 19th 1931. At the Board of Trade enquiry into the loss of the Ocklinge, Captain Driscoll, found guilty of making false declarations and forging documents, received a six-month prison sentence as well as having his certificate suspended for twelve months. She was steel screw steamer of 3,450 tons net, 5,686 tons gross, powered by two steam turbines, geared to a single shaft, made the Federal Shipbuilding Company of Kearney, New Jersey. Under the ownership of the Isthmian SS Co of New York, and commanded by Captain Joseph Herman, the Bessemer City left Liverpool on the evening of October 31st 1936 for London, to complete discharging her general cargo from the USA. Twenty-four hours later she passed Godrevy light which was almost hidden by thick wintry haze, and shortly before midnight grounded heavily under Pen Enys Point. In the weeks following, the Bessemer City broke up. Her poor complete with mast and cargo derricks, drifted under Trevalgan Cliff, and heavy seas demolished even the large forward and midship sections. Cases of tinned fruit and salmon, boxes of raisins, sultanas and other delicacies ripened in the California sunshine, came ashore from Clodgy to Newquay. A Penzance firm recovered a lot, but a great deal more vanished into kitchen cupboards and was put to good used during the days of scarcity that followed. Though her location was well known; the Bessemer City lay undisturbed until September 1963, when she was re-discovered by crayfish divers. By 1977 she had undergone a major refit to extend her freezer capacity, and left her home port of Hull to go mackerel fishing in Cornwall.
