The Enterprise [Enterprize] (1846) was bound from Charlestown, USA, to Manchester with a cargo of china clay when its sails were blown out in a gale leaving the ship drifting. The St. Ives RNLI lifeboat James Stevens No. 10 was launched and rescued the three crew and the boy. The ship then ran aground on the Western Spit, half a mile from Hayle Bar. Enterprise finally broke up in a gale on 14 February 1904. She was on her way into Newlyn after developing engine trouble off Pendeen the previous afternoon, and there had been no warning of how close the weather had brought her to the Lamorna Cliffs until she struck on January 13th 1937. Captain Josef Lus radioed an 'SOS' but the ground swell was so bad that he had to give the order to abandon ship without waiting for rescue. As the dinghy was launched a wave overturned it: the captain and mate jumped into the sea, but engineer Hessene and deckhands Easton and Miel righted the dinghy and pulled clear, only to capsize on the point of being rescued by Penlee Lifeboat. The trawler's young cabin boy, Valentine Maartens, was missing, presumed swept overboard and drowned. The Vierge Marie rolled over to starboard a few hours after going ashore and within a day was jumbled mass of broken plating and fittings jammed beneath the cliffs at Tater Du. A farm labourer who lived near Carn Boscawen stepped from his cottage door shortly before dawn and was greeted by the thick, pungent reek of fuel oil wafting in from the sea. Buttoning his heavy waterproofs against the driving wind and rain, he picked his way across the fields and soon made out the lights of the Vierge Marie, ashore in a narrow cove just beyond Tater Du point. When he heard the shouts of the crew he wasted no time in getting to the farm where he worked, so that the news could be telephoned to Penzance. He then returned to the wreck with more men and ropes, only to see a small boat, manned by three men, capsize as the Penlee Lifeboat closed in to rescue them. They were buoyed up their lifejackets, but even so were in a bad way when they were hauled out. Artificial respiration was kept up on all three as the lifeboat sped back to Newlyn, but they died before they reached hospital. He was married to Houghton Emily Vivian and they had two daughters, Elizabeth Lamorna (known as Mornie) and Joan Houghton. The collection shows Lamorna with well known public figures; of himself at work; and many of his wife and children. Included are snapshots of many of his friends at social events. Description An account of the resource The last large steamer wrecked at Cape Cornwall fell to the 4,538-ton Aida Lauro of Naples. She had been launched in July 1923 by the Richardson Dock Company of Stockton as the Randor, for the Cardigan Shipping Company, and was a steel screw steamer, engined by Blair & Co, 412.7 ft long, 52 ft in beam and with a draft of 24.3 ft. She subsequently became the Welsh-owned Treharris, before being sold to Alfredo Laura of Naples early in 1937. She left Liverpool at noon on June 29 1937, bound for Hull to complete discharge of her cargo of cotton seed, linseed, and peanuts from West Africa. On the following night, off Godrevy, fine weather gave way to thick fog and at 01:00 am on July 1st she struck below Kenidjack Castle, in the same place as Malta. Fifteen of the crew, accompanied by the ship's cat, rowed themselves ashore. Forty-eights hours later the Aida Laura parted forward of the bridge, and in a week had gone.
