After her death her family presented a substantial collection of her negatives, contact sheets and prints, plus some press material and correspondence, to the Morrab Library in Penzance. In May 2008 an exhibition was held at the Library, curated by Robin Lenman, who has also compiled this catalogue. Description An account of the resource The Dunboyne was a full-rigged ship built at Whitehaven and launched in March 1888. Now renamed the af Chapman she is still afloat, and is reputedly the World's third oldest surviving iron-built ship (the Euterpe, built in the Isle of Man, is one of the older ships). The af Chapman is moored at Skeppsholmen in Stockholm, where she has been used as a youth hostel since1949, and has hosted over a million visitors. Named the Dunboyne by her original Dublin owners, Charles E. Martin & Co., she participated in the trade to Australia in her early years. According to Tom Messenger (see Source 2), who was First Mate in 1890 on voyages between Wales and Australia, her master, Capt. O'Neill, had his wife and daughter aboard. Unfortunately the child died and was buried at sea. Sold to Norway in 1909, the Dunboyne was renamed the G.D. Kennedy in July 1915 when she was bought by the Swedish shipping company Transatlantic. This company sold her to the Swedish government in 1924, and it was then that the ship was finally renamed af Chapman. She spent ten more years at sea, ending her final voyage on the 27th September 1934. During World War II, the af Chapman was moored in Stockholm harbour, serving as a floating barracks for the Swedish Navy. No longer required by the Navy after the War, the ship was saved when the City of Stockholm bought her in 1947. Title A name given to the resource "Earl of Arran" Beached on St. Martins Description An account of the resource The Auxiliary packet Earl of Arran ran ashore on Irishman's ledge on the July 16 1872. Built in Paisley in 1860 for the Ardrossen to Arran passenger run, the Earl of Arran served in the Clyde from 1860 until 1868, when she worked excursions between Ayr and Troon before going south to Scilly in 1869. The Earl of Arran left Penzance about 10am bound for St Mary's with a crew of eight hands, ninety-two passengers, mail, and general cargo. The vessel was detained at Penzance beyond her normal time for sailing. On nearing the Scillies a passenger named Stephen Woodcock, who belonged to the crew of a local pilot-boat but was not himself a licensed pilot, suggested to the master that he could save time by taking a short-cut through St Martin's Neck, instead of the longer, normal passage through Crow Sound. Captain Deason replied that he knew of no such short-cut, but on Woodcock's assurance that he knew it well, agreed to let him take the packet through. No sooner had the Earl of Arran got some distance into St Martin's neck than she struck a rock, and so severe was the damage that the vessel had to be run ashore on Nornour, where she became a total loss. The passengers and the whole of the cargo were saved, but nothing could be done for the paddle-steamer and she was broken up for scrap after she broke in two. Title A name given to the resource Harry Collection Description An account of the resource This collection comprises of the family photos of Carlene Edith Harry, who was born in Essex in 1937. She was the only child of Edith Sarah Harry (nee Tuck, 1911-1974) and Charles Clifford Harry (known as Clifford, 1904-1997) Carlene's father was born in Carnyorth and she was immensely proud of her Cornish heritage and keenly interested in all aspects of local history and culture. Her working life was spent at the Bank of England. When she eventually moved back to Cornwall she first lived in Truro before finally returning to Pendeen, where she immersed herself in the local community, being an active member of her church, the W.I. and several local history groups. Morrab Library holds the publications of the Penwith Local History Group: 'Growing Up in West Cornwall', 'West Cornwall in the Twentieth Century', and 'Homes and households in west Cornwall'. All of these include articles written by Carlene, taken from her father's memories of Carnyorth and other related material. Her second cousin was Raymond Harry who, under the pseudonym Jack Penhale, wrote 'The Mine Under the Sea', based on his experience working at Levant Mine as a 14 year old during the 1st World war. He was there at the time of the Levant Mine Disaster. Title A name given to the resource Lamorna Birch Family Photos Description An account of the resource A small collection of photos from the family of Samuel John 'Lamorna' Birch. 1869-1955, the founder of the colony of artists and writers who lived and worked in and around the Lamorna Valley near Penzance, Cornwall. He was born near Liverpool in 1869 and adopted the additional name of Lamorna after 1896. He was married to Houghton Emily Vivian and they had two daughters, Elizabeth Lamorna (known as Mornie) and Joan Houghton. The collection shows Lamorna with well known public figures; of himself at work; and many of his wife and children. Included are snapshots of many of his friends at social events. An excellent biography of him was written by Austin Wormleighton , 'A Painter Laureate, Lamorna Birch and his cicle'. Published by Sanson & Company. 1995.
