Description

Built at White City, Shepherd's Bush, London and opened by King George V (the Prince of Wales) on 14th May 1908 for the Franco British Exhibition and Olympic Games which Britain organised the same year.
Supplied by the 100 year-old Cleveland Bridge & Engineering Co., it caught on in a big way in an Edwardian England which was just becoming accustomed to the still-controversial motor car. It carried an estimated 8,000 riders each day and, according to contemporary reports, "...queues where so long that many thousands more gave up the wait for the opportunity to view the exhibition from two hundred feet up"

8 million people visited the exhibition which closed on 31st October in the same year.
