One of Cornwall's oldest, biggest and richest mines. Mineral recovery started on the site started in the C16 and continued until the 1920 earning many fortunes for its shareholders. Over £6 million of Copper & Tin sold in 18th Century alone.
Bal Maidens spalling [breaking] rocks before they are fed into Main Stamps for crushing &washing at rear of picture. Many young women and boys were thus employed until as late as the opening decades of the C20.
