Description
The Brixham Trawler, Torbay Lass, was wrecked on the Cressars, Penzance Pier on December 8th 1891.
She was in tow from the Mount, where she had just unloaded coal from Runcorn to Penzance. But the tug Merlin, skippered by a local shipwright called Bernardo Speshott, failed to raise sufficient steam and allowed the schooner to drift on to the rocks.
The packet Lady of the Isles towed the Torbay Lass clear, only to have her sink a few hundred yards off the reef.
Description from Richard Larn, Cornish Shipwrecks: The South Coast (Newton Abbot: David & Charles, 1971), p. 179.
