Description

The Andromeda was a 1,762-ton, four master barque that wrecked at Killygerran Head. She had been launched in 1890 by Duncans of Glasgow but in the later had been sold to Black & More of London.

She had arrived off Falmouth 116 days out from Portland, Oregon, with 3,000 tons of wheat. But due to wartime regulations Captain Deeks was not allowed to come in without a pilot. Neither cutters nor tugs could reach him in the heavy south westerly gale, and the Andromeda dragged her anchors on to the rocks at four o'clock the next morning.

An able seaman survived coming ashore on a capsized lifeboat, but an apprentice was lost overboard. Captain Deeks, his wife, her young sister, and the rest of the crew went up the rigging, where the captains little daughter perched asleep on the knees of a sailor until they were rescued by Portscatho rocket brigade at dawn.

The Andromeda was auctioned for breaking up on March 3rd 1915 for a mere £170.
