Classic photo of a large procession of townsfolk along Newlyn's new harbour road during a gala day
The new harbour road was built in 1908. It joined Newlyn Town and Street-an-Nowan, previously only subject to access at low water. The photo shows Newlyn Town before 'The Clearances' and building of Gwavas Estate and the new cliff walls. It is thought that these people are from 'Uplong', Newlyn Town. The big house at the top right is Penzer House.

Similar spot to JDC 414 and 415.
View looking towards the completed South Pier, Green Rocks and Newlyn Town top right. You can just see the old pier - dark area, top right. Fish are being landed from small boats. Trails in the harbour mud indicate carts crossing to Newlyn Town, only possible at low tide. North Pier not built yet.

A view across Newlyn Harbour to the South Pier.
This area near the Fradgam, Newlyn, was known as Gwavas Quay. The opening to the right now incorporates road access down to join the later harbour road (1908). Cottages still there. Around the cottages to the right leads to Wesley Place. Mount's Bay luggers are at moorings. This was a favoured vantage point in earlier times.

In view is the fish market and ice works. The vessel under the cover is the lifeboat "Elizabeth & Blanche' when she was stationed under the cliff from 1909-1913; 1913 she was moved to the new station house at Penlee near Mousehole. This section of beach, still not developed, was in regular use to beach the vessels. All sailing vessels, no motors until nearly 1920.

North and South piers have been built, tall ships are alongside piers before motors introduced. Houses in the foreground were demolished c 1939 under the Clearance Scheme. Replacement flats built in 1953/54. No houses built on the new road area. Alexandra Terrace is on the left behind the North Pier in view. Flags on South Pier indicate possible state of progress with harbour construction.

In the foreground is the cleared site of the houses of the Navy Inn, demolished in 1939 that inspired the petition to Westminster in October 1937. Well documented. Building of the new Navy Inn flats started around 1953. Many people who previously lived in the old houses moved to the new Gwavas Estate above the Bowjey.

It is about half tide and Newlyn Town can be seen on the hillside behind. Mount's Bay sailing luggers in view, some afloat and some aground in the foreground.
*A reference point would be the present Star Inn to the immediate right just out of the picture.
