Title A name given to the resource Wreck of Tay Craig off Gear Rocks Description An account of the resource Wreck of Tay Craig Nine sailors were saved on a stormy day when a steamer floundered on rocks just off Penzance. It was exactly 87 years ago, in the early hours of the morning that the Taycraig, a Cornish owned but London registered steamer came a cropper when it struck Gear Rocks just off Penzance Promenade. In a strong gale of wind which sprang up suddenly, and a blinding rainstorm, the steamer was driven up on to the rocks. The steamer wrapped herself around the tall post and cage beacon of gear Rocks while en route to Newlyn to take on roadstone. Her crew were burning mattresses to attract attention. The lifeboats search lights showed that they were wearing life jackets and seeking shelter in the fire house at the forecastle head. They did manage to attract attention and the Penlee Lifeboat was launched to come to their aid. However the weather was reportedly so foul on that dreadful in January 1936, that it took the Penlee crew - who did not have the modern equipment of today - half an hour to reach the ship only over a mile away from Penlee lifeboat station. Other report said the storm was so ferocious that day that bits of the broken up ship were flung over onto the Prom. Yet the lifeboat crew did manage to reach the steamer and managed to save all nine sailors on board including one who had reportedly jumped overboard but was quickly picked up. The Tacraig eventually sank until her funnel and masts stood out of the water and could not be salvaged. A spokeswoman for Penlee Lifeboat station said: "Another January day and another meritorious rescue from our archives. Some 87 years ago today, during the early hours of 27 January 1936, the new W and S lifeboat launched from Penlee Point, Mousehole and went to the assistance of the steamer ‘Taycraig’ which had struck Gear Rocks just off Penzance Promenade. Title A name given to the resource Wreck of The SS Wilson Description An account of the resource Clive Carter´s "Cornish Shipwrecks, The North Coast" states: This wreck´s tragic story began at 2.30 am on the 22nd January 1939 when St. Just coastguard sighted a large steamer smothered by breaking seas 2 miles north of Cape Cornwall. At the time there was a WNW storm force 10 blowing with winds of over 90mph. The St. Ives lifeboat John & Sarah Eliza Stych, aided by 80 volunteers working chestdeep in freezing water, was launched from the harbour. Four hours later the lifeboat, three times capsized and six of her crew drowned, was tossed ashore broken and gutted on to Godrevy rocks, leaving only one survivor. The big steamer had come within a few hundred yards of the shore before making off seawards. She had made neither rocket or radio signals and had apparently escaped unscathed. But other bodies than those of the lifeboatmen were coming ashore, and heavy wreckage was found near Zennor. A lifebouy enscribed Fosca was picked up, but this Italian steamer was unharmed. Under Wicca Cliffs a broken lifeboat marked Becheville was found, but this 2,561 ton London steamer had already limped in to Falmouth with 6 of her crew badly injured. Further wreckage indicated a French trawler. At Tregurthen a farmer found a broken lifebuoy, one half bearing SS Wilston and the other "Glasgow". The Wilston was last positvely sighted 20 miles NNW of the Longships, however no distress signal of any kind was ever received from her. Nothing more was heard from her, other than a weak distress signal prefixed by the call sign "Dieppe 1517". At 5.45 am on the 14th the Coastguard received a telephone call from Porthcurno, to say a local man, out looking for driftwood on Porth Chapel beach, had come across a trawler with DP1517 on her bow. There were no survivors. The captain and most of the 17 crew were found drowned, these were taken back to France in another French trawler. It was assumed that she had gone ashore when her engine failed in the storm. She served in the First World War and in numerous operations in the Second World War, earning the most battle honours of any Royal Navy ship. She ran aground on her way to be broken up in 1947 and was scrapped in 1950.
