Title A name given to the resource Zennor Wayside Museum Subject The topic of the resource Everyday life in rural Zennor Description An account of the resource The collection came from the Zennor Wayside Museum which was housed at the old mill in Zennor. It was privately run and when the owners retired the photograph were gifted to the Morrab Library. The following is taken from the Wayside Folk Museum Website: The natural features of land and sea ensured that the area around to Zennor was remote and inaccessible until around the start of the 19th century. Only pack animals and sledges brought goods to this part of Cornwall, as there were no roads. Such isolation helped to preserve both ancient implements and customs. Towards the middle of the 20th century, Colonel Freddie Hirst began collecting relics peculiar to Zennor which eventually became exhibits in the Wayside Museum. Today there are more than five thousand items in the collection, exhibited in sixteen different display areas. These include an extensive collection of photographs and detailed information about people who have lived in the area. Exhibits include waterwheels from the Cornish mining industry, a cobble's shop with an exhibition on the history of the museum, and an 18th century kitchen. There is also a mill building, containing original machinery and millstones, a collection of early agricultural implements and a blacksmith's forge. In addition there are lots of domestic implements, many of which can be handled to demonstrate their original use. Within the complex is a tea garden, gift shop and a children's museum with a quiz trail and certificate for children who participate. Zennor is situated on the coast road to Land's End, four miles west of St Ives. The museum is open daily between April and October each year. It covers hillforts, megaliths, ancient villages, artefacts, excavations such as the Roman villa at Magor near Redruth, and Cornish cultural events such as the first Cornish Gorsedh at Boscawen-ûn in 1928.<br /><br />In 1935 Stanley entered a News Chronicle competition called "Britain 1935". A copy of his entry form was found attached to the back of a small print, listing his address, camera model and film type. He lived at Barncoose, Redruth, Cornwall, and used an Ensign Cameo No. 2 camera with Imperial Eclipse plates.<br /><br />The glass negatives were cleaned, repackaged and digitised thanks to funding from <a href="http://www.cornwallheritagetrust.org">Cornwall Heritage Trust</a>. Title A name given to the resource Wreck City of Cardiff Description An account of the resource The City of Cardiff was on passage from Dartmouth to Barry Roads in ballast when it was forced shore in heavy weather on 21 March 1912. Despite laying anchors to prevent the ship being driven further in shore under the cliffs, the cables broke and the ship ended up broadside-to. The Times newspaper reported this on 22 March 1912: 'The steamer City of Cardiff, 3,089 tons, during the strong westerly gale yesterday afternoon went ashore at Millbay, two miles south-east of Land's End, while on a voyage from Havre to Cardiff in ballast. There was a thick fog at the time, and the ship got out of her course, presumably through a strong set of the tide. 'A resident on the coast heard the sound of rockets, and so close was the steamer to the shore that he hailed her and advised the crew to get into their boats. He directed them where to land by means of a lantern, and though the work of landing was attended with great danger, it was carried out without loss of life. The captain's wife and son were among the rescued. The rocket brigade was summoned from Mousehole and had a very difficult journey over hilly roads to the scene of the wreck, but before they reached the place the crew had been landed. 'The SOUTH AMERICA is a vessel of 2,700 tons register, and 7,000 tons carrying capacity. She is owned by Lowther, Latter and Co., of London. She left Hamburg on Sunday, and was due at Cardiff today.
