Caldwell Harpur, (born Elliott Calwell Harpur in Spalford, Nottinghamshire, England on 25 February 1866) kept very detailed diaries from his 14th to 73rd years. He left these to the Penzance (Morrab) Library with the wish that they should be published after his death (which was 27th January 1945).
Also, donated was a large amount of correspondence and a family photo album.
The photo album has been restored and rests safely in the Morrab Library Photographic Archive. All the photos in the album have now been scanned and can be seen here.
Apart from a photograph of his father, Rev George Harpur, they are mostly images of his maternal relatives.
Some are of views, servants and unknown people. A number are alas missing from the album.

Lamorna Birch Family Photos

An account of the resource
A small collection of photos from the family of Samuel John 'Lamorna' Birch. 1869-1955, the founder of the colony of artists and writers who lived and worked in and around the Lamorna Valley near Penzance, Cornwall.
He was born near Liverpool in 1869 and adopted the additional name of Lamorna after 1896.
He was married to Houghton Emily Vivian and they had two daughters, Elizabeth Lamorna (known as Mornie) and Joan Houghton.
The collection shows Lamorna with well known public figures; of himself at work; and many of his wife and children.
Included are snapshots of many of his friends at social events.
An excellent biography of him was written by Austin Wormleighton , 'A Painter Laureate, Lamorna Birch and his cicle'. Published by Sanson & Company. 1995.
These photographs were donated by Judith Kerr, widow of Adam, grandson of Lamorna Birch.

An album of photos was donated to the library with no information attached other than a signature inscribed inside the cover.
'Florence M. Woodman Turner April 1907'.
From this name we found that this lady was born in Essex in 1885, died in 1977 and was buried in Marazion cemetery.
She was the daughter of Samuel Thomas Turner and Florence Maud Dennis, the latter being the daughter of Charles Dennis and Mary Woodman who lived at The Bungalow, Perran Crossroads. (Now a Chinese restaurant.)
Many of the family came down from Essex to visit Charles and Mary, and later settled here themselves.
They took many photos of the countryside around the area.
Also in the album are many photos of the family at home in Essex.
Florence M.Woodman Turner married Charles Henry Lee, son of Henry Lee, butler for Lord St. Levan on St Michaels Mount.
