Title A name given to the resource Zennor Wayside Museum Subject The topic of the resource Everyday life in rural Zennor Description An account of the resource The collection came from the Zennor Wayside Museum which was housed at the old mill in Zennor. It was privately run and when the owners retired the photograph were gifted to the Morrab Library. The following is taken from the Wayside Folk Museum Website: The natural features of land and sea ensured that the area around to Zennor was remote and inaccessible until around the start of the 19th century. Only pack animals and sledges brought goods to this part of Cornwall, as there were no roads. Such isolation helped to preserve both ancient implements and customs. Towards the middle of the 20th century, Colonel Freddie Hirst began collecting relics peculiar to Zennor which eventually became exhibits in the Wayside Museum. Today there are more than five thousand items in the collection, exhibited in sixteen different display areas. These include an extensive collection of photographs and detailed information about people who have lived in the area. Exhibits include waterwheels from the Cornish mining industry, a cobble's shop with an exhibition on the history of the museum, and an 18th century kitchen. There is also a mill building, containing original machinery and millstones, a collection of early agricultural implements and a blacksmith's forge. In addition there are lots of domestic implements, many of which can be handled to demonstrate their original use. Within the complex is a tea garden, gift shop and a children's museum with a quiz trail and certificate for children who participate. Zennor is situated on the coast road to Land's End, four miles west of St Ives. The museum is open daily between April and October each year. W.J. Trevaskis was in a geographically-constrained way a successful local photographer. Evidence exists of a carte de visit taken in 1863 although he was first listed as a photographer in 1883. The business was run from the Leedstown house now called 'An Gernyk'. From 1889 Trevaskis had a branch studio at Nettles Hill in Helston. Carte de visit imprints of the later 1870s or the 1880s announce that he was at Leedstown on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays; Porthleven, Tuesdays and Wednesdays; Breage on Fridays. Business continued into the early years of the 20th Century - it is not known when Mr Trevaskis died. The collection consists of images of people and views from a number of photographers who were working in Cornwall from the mid 19th Century. It seems that almost every town in Cornwall had one or more photographers working in studios. Brooks, Beringer, Burrow, Collenso, Gibson and Preston are just some of those. Many won awards for their work and won medals awarded by the Cornwall Polytechnic Society which opened in Falmouth in 1833. Carte-de-visite became very popular after 1854, often used as calling cards containing the photographic mount, there are many examples of this type. It is apparent that people turned up in their "Sunday Best" to be photographed , it is interesting to note the fashion changes over time from the Victorian era to the Edwardian. All the while changes were taking place with the photographic process, from plate and gradually to film and negative and the digital process that we have today. He was born near Liverpool in 1869 and adopted the additional name of Lamorna after 1896. He was married to Houghton Emily Vivian and they had two daughters, Elizabeth Lamorna (known as Mornie) and Joan Houghton. The collection shows Lamorna with well known public figures; of himself at work; and many of his wife and children. Included are snapshots of many of his friends at social events. The storms of the winter of 2013/2014 destroyed a great deal of the coastline but also revealed much which had been invisible. Mount's Bay suffered a great deal from these storms and the harbours at Mousehole, Newlyn, Penzance and Porthleven suffered varying degrees of damage. Much that had been hidden for many years came to light. On the beach opposite the Queens Hotel two sides of what appeared to be a square structure appeared immediately under the wall. The eastern side had been visible from time to time but not the northern side. There was also much evidence of parts of this structure scattered around and the remains of what appeared to be iron girders. A map hanging in the Morrab Library, Penzance, and the Tithe Map of 1844 showed "Baths" at this point. Part of the building rested on dry land while another longer part of the building would have been over the beach and at higher tides sea would have washed up against it. The tithe map shows that the building was divided up forming a small square on the eastern side. The Tithe Apportionment gives at 1449 "Baths and Bathing House", the landlord is John Boase and the lessee and occupier is Timothy Burt. These baths should not be confused with the ones at the bottom of Jennings' Street which must have been the ones described by Dr Paris in 1824(1) ".....since the publication of the first edition [1816] of this work, HOT and COLD SEA BATHS have been completed upon a suitable scale of convenience. The waiting room belonging to the establishment commands a prospect of very singular beauty. St Michael's Mount rising boldly in front forms a striking relief to the extended line of coast which constitutes the background while the undulating shores to the left skirted by the little village of Chyandour, are well contrasted on the opposite side, with the busy scene of the pier, and the numerous vessels in the harbour." It would have been impossible then and now to have seen Chyandour or Penzance harbour activities from the site of Timothy Burt's baths! It is interesting to note that visitors would have been drawn to the activities of the port as well as the scenery. C.G. He did not know when they were opened but he claimed that on the 31st August 1816 "a great storm occurred which broke all the windows, the waves entered the buildings and washed out the furniture and fittings." All this would seem to conflict with an advertisement in the West Briton newspaper of 17th June 1825 where "SEA WATER BATHS lately erected at the end of Jennings' Street close to the sea" were to be sold, leasehold for 1000 years and a yearly rent of £3. The baths were sold for both ladies and gentlemen. There are excellent warm and cold baths, a pump room and "a handsome spacious waiting room over the baths" and "a delightful view of Mount's Bay". Title A name given to the resource Zennor Wayside Museum Subject The topic of the resource Everyday life in rural Zennor Description An account of the resource The collection came from the Zennor Wayside Museum which was housed at the old mill in Zennor. It was privately run and when the owners retired the photograph were gifted to the Morrab Library. The following is taken from the Wayside Folk Museum Website: The natural features of land and sea ensured that the area around to Zennor was remote and inaccessible until around the start of the 19th century. Only pack animals and sledges brought goods to this part of Cornwall, as there were no roads. Such isolation helped to preserve both ancient implements and customs. Towards the middle of the 20th century, Colonel Freddie Hirst began collecting relics peculiar to Zennor which eventually became exhibits in the Wayside Museum. Today there are more than five thousand items in the collection, exhibited in sixteen different display areas. These include an extensive collection of photographs and detailed information about people who have lived in the area. Exhibits include waterwheels from the Cornish mining industry, a cobble's shop with an exhibition on the history of the museum, and an 18th century kitchen. There is also a mill building, containing original machinery and millstones, a collection of early agricultural implements and a blacksmith's forge. In addition there are lots of domestic implements, many of which can be handled to demonstrate their original use. Within the complex is a tea garden, gift shop and a children's museum with a quiz trail and certificate for children who participate. Zennor is situated on the coast road to Land's End, four miles west of St Ives. The museum is open daily between April and October each year.
