She had sailed from Barry in the early house of April 28th 1911, bound for Venice with 4,800 tons of coal, but when twelve hours out her chief engineer was taken seriously ill and Captain Albert Crowthers altered course for Mount's Bay to land him. As the weather was foggy, the captain steered a careful course past the Runnelstone and was almost in the bay when he made a bad mistake. A large black and white check buoy was seen bobbing in the heavy seas and was taken to be that marking Mount Mopus Ledge, between St. Micheals Mount and Porthleven. They had been confused by the mist and the rain, and a few minutes later, as the Cragoswald passed carefully to port of the buoy, there came a tremendous crash and she shuddered to a stop. Though she was going very slowly, her bows were firmly impaled and for the next four days she hung precariously on the Low Lee while salvage craft, tugs, and divers fussed about her. Twice the salvors were driven off by rough seas, but on the morning of May 2nd the Cragoswald floated free and was towed to Penzance. Five days later, escorted by tugs, she left Mount's Bay under her own steam for the repair docks at Falmouth. After seven months she was ashore again, this time in Jury's Cap, Near Dungeness, during the south-west gale which wrecked the barque Saluto in Mount's Bay. The Cragoswald spent a week on the beach before being reflected and she lasted until April 18 1917, when a German U-Boat Torpedoed her 60 miles west by south of the Bishop Rock. Then, at 21:30 pm it was the helmsman and not the look-out who first saw a blurred flash in the murk dead ahead. Seconds later, breakers were seen grounded on the rocks below Bass Point. Badly holed, she settled rapidly by the stern and in less than ten minutes had to be abandoned. The first distress rocket, fired from a boat by the first mate, explored almost in front of the coastguard's lookout and the Lizard and Cadgwith lifeboats were soon afloat and helping in the rescue. Next morning, when the fog lifted, the Cromdael was an awesome spectacle, poop deck under water and bows on the rocks below the high cliffs, every sail set but hanging limply from the yards in the still air. At low water, her crew boarded her and managed to recover some personal belongings and the ship's instruments. Her master, Captain Arthur, had earlier been able to check his position with a passing steamer and was not unduly worried until several hours had passed without sight and sound of the Lizard and St. Anthony Lighthouses. Then, at 21:30 pm it was the helmsman and not the look-out who first saw a blurred flash in the murk dead ahead. Seconds later, breakers were seen grounded on the rocks below Bass Point. Badly holed, she settled rapidly by the stern and in less than ten minutes had to be abandoned. The first distress rocket, fired from a boat by the first mate, explored almost in front of the coastguard's lookout and the Lizard and Cadgwith lifeboats were soon afloat and helping in the rescue. Next morning, when the fog lifted, the Cromdael was an awesome spectacle, poop deck under water and bows on the rocks below the high cliffs, every sail set but hanging limply from the yards in the still air. At low water, her crew boarded her and managed to recover some personal belongings and the ship's instruments. The wreck was later put up for auction but, with a ruined cargo, she was of little value apart from her sailing gear and Harris Brothers of Falmouth bought her £41, later reselling her to a third party. A week after she came ashore, the Cromdale broke up in a heavy SSW gale and very little salvage work was ever carried out on the remains. Built in Paisley in 1860 for the Ardrossen to Arran passenger run, the Earl of Arran served in the Clyde from 1860 until 1868, when she worked excursions between Ayr and Troon before going south to Scilly in 1869. The Earl of Arran left Penzance about 10am bound for St Mary's with a crew of eight hands, ninety-two passengers, mail, and general cargo. The vessel was detained at Penzance beyond her normal time for sailing. On nearing the Scillies a passenger named Stephen Woodcock, who belonged to the crew of a local pilot-boat but was not himself a licensed pilot, suggested to the master that he could save time by taking a short-cut through St Martin's Neck, instead of the longer, normal passage through Crow Sound. Captain Deason replied that he knew of no such short-cut, but on Woodcock's assurance that he knew it well, agreed to let him take the packet through. No sooner had the Earl of Arran got some distance into St Martin's neck than she struck a rock, and so severe was the damage that the vessel had to be run ashore on Nornour, where she became a total loss. The passengers and the whole of the cargo were saved, but nothing could be done for the paddle-steamer and she was broken up for scrap after she broke in two.
