She had been towed into Falmouth early the same day by the German tug Seefalke, having sheared the bolts of her rudder quadrant in a gale of Ushant whilst bound from Bilboa to Newport with Iron ore. After hurried repairs, she sailed the same day for Wales and two hours later was aground on the point, only sixty yards offshore, flooded fore and aft. Salvage started immediately and nearly 100 labourers were employed to remove the cargo. But she was never refloated, and eventually the owners, Messrs Constants of Cardiff, asked the Western Marine Company to break her up for scrap. At Lowland Point, there is still a huge propeller on the rocks, said to have come from her. The Ocklinge was the second steamer of Constant's lost off Cornwall, the Lyminge having been wrecked at Gurnard's Head on September 19th 1931. At the Board of Trade enquiry into the loss of the Ocklinge, Captain Driscoll, found guilty of making false declarations and forging documents, received a six-month prison sentence as well as having his certificate suspended for twelve months. The ship diverted to Eddystone and Lizard Lighthouses to get a navigational fix. However, in light misty rain the ship was about 15 miles off course and ran onto Lowland Point on Sunday 21 May. The passengers and crew were taken off the next morning by tug. The ship was eventually refloated. The Paris was eventually patched and towed to a dockyard where she was repaired, had one of her funnels removed and was again made seaworthy. Misfortune again dogged her career. She had another mishap in New York Harbour , was again made seaworthy and re-christened the Philadelphia. It was while she was trying to get clear on the evening of the February 1st 1885 that she was wrecked. In 1896 she was sold to B. Wencke & Company of Hamburg and her new owners seemed able to bring out her finer sailing qualities. She left Hamburg for Port Talbot in late February 1911 and loaded coal brickets for Mejillones, on the west coast of South America. The weather was so bad that she took six weeks to round Cape Horn, and later was almost wrecked at Taltal. At Mejillones, she discharged and loaded nitrates and sails for Falmouth, arriving on February 1st 1912. As an example of German Discipline, the first mate ordered four men aloft to scrape and varnish the main royal yard as she entered harbour, despite the fact that it was snowy hard. She lay at Falmouth until February 10th, when she left for Hamburg to discharge in tow of the German tug Ancona. But they had hardly got out into Falmouth bay than the strong southeasterly wind refreshed and backed. Both ships were gradually forced backwards down the coast, and despite all the tugs efforts at 9 pm the Pindos was carried broadside on to Chynhalls Point, less than half a mile from Coverack Village. The tug captain held her head to sea for some time to stop her broaching, but was eventually force to slip the hawser. Meanwhile the Coverack lifeboat had putt off, and aided by the glare of newly provided acetylene searchlights, rescued the Germans by breeches-buoy from the waveswept and listing poop deck. On February 20th, the Pindos, together with her gear and stores, was sold for £225, but later gales soon reduced her to pieces. Over the years salvage has been carried out, but parts of her masts, rigging, plates and keel still lie on the seaward side of the Chynhalls. She caught fire during the wreck and was alight for almost three days. At the time, a number of so-called tankers were either converted cargo ships/ had been built on the lines of a conventional cargo-carrying ship, with accommodation and bridge amidships. The 405ft-long Ponus was just a 'tanker' and had been built in 1902 by Russels of Port Glasgow, where she was launched as the Kennebec. She arrived at Falmouth at 7pm on November 2nd from Trinidad and as no pilot was available she was anchored three-quarters of a mile off-shore. During the night the wind increased almost to gale force and though a second anchor was dropped it fouled the first and the Ponus dragged ashore on the spit of rock between Swanpool and Gyllyngvase. Blasts on her siren and distress rockets roused most of Falmouth and hundreds flocked to the beach to watch the tug Victor trying to tow the Falmouth lifeboat round Pendennis to the rescue. But heavy seas forced them to turn back and at 10 am Captain Collins, master of the Ponus, risked lowering two of the ships boats, both of which managed to reach the shore. The master himself and the rest of the crew were rescued by the lifeboat on a second attempt. An hour later a thin trickle of smoke was seen to be rising from the ship and quickly became a thick plume. The onlookers were first amused, then alarmed to see a man appear on deck wearing nothing but a small vest. Soon discovering that he was the only man left on board., he assembled a primitive raft, threw it overboard and jumped in after it. Raft and man were swept under the stem and pinned against it and only a timely rescue by a dinghy which put off from the beach saved the life of the man in the vest. By evening, the entire midship section of the Ponus was ablaze and when the funnel collapsed the entire sky was lit by flames. At 5:30 am on November 4th a terrific explosion sent burning oil pouring out over the sea to spread along the beach in an unbroken line. Further explosions occurred as the day wore on and soon the fire had become a very real hazard to property on shore. A boat from the Ponus, somehow full of blazing oil, broke adrift and floated down to Pendennis, spreading the fire. By 7pm the ship's sides were glowing red-hot and the rising tide caused the sea around the wreck to boil and spit. The fire burnt all that night and all the next day, finally dying down on November 6th. Yet despite its severity the ship remained on the rocks, its structure virtually intact. For two years until November 1918, when a large section of the stern was cut away and taken into Falmouth docks for scrapping. The remainder was demolished by successive salvage firms and gales, but a great deal of her iron plating remains in the shallows. On some charts of the wreck of the Ponus is still marked, with the inscription "being demolished 1923."
