In the course of a somewhat chequered career, she had been picked up in Bass Strait, Tasmania in 1896 by a steamer which had found her crippled and her master and chief officer dead on board. Three years later she was sold to Crawford & Rowath of Glasgow and they, in turn, passed her on to her final owners, Akties Hansy of Frederickstadt in 1910. The Hansy left Sundsvall, Sweden on October 3rd 1911 with a cargo of timber and pig-iron for Melbourne and after a rough passage down Channel was caught by a hard SSW gale off the Lizard. While trying to claw off the coast she missed stays in coming about, became trapped in Housel Bay and was wrecked at Carn Table. The crew were rescued by breeches-buoy from the shore and the master, Captain Kiltvo, and the mate were later taken off by the lifeboat. Two days later, when the weather had moderated and a salvage party were able to board the wreck, they found a pig feasting on potatoes in what remained of the crew's quarters, while two goats eyed them amiably form the comfort of a bunk. For weeks after the stranding, great quantities of timber were washed out of the wreck and thankfully collected by the local fishing boats. It was the rocks in Bread and Cheese One, St. Martins which tore the holes in her plating. Owned by Star Navigation Company of Liverpool, the Horsa had been launched by Scotts of Greenock in 1860. The vessel was homeward bound under Captain Rolston, from Bluff Harbour, New Zealand with tinned meat, wool, and grain. This 1,128 tons net, iron ship came too close inshore while weathering St. Martin during a full easterly gale, missed stays and went hard aground. the St. Mary's lifeboat was called out and arrived to find the Horsa settling down on the ebb tide. That same afternoon, on the flood, after Captain Rolson decided to sail his ship the rest of the way to St. Marys, but asked the packet to remain in attendance. It was unfortunate that he did, for she was able to rescue his entire crew when the Horsa rolled over and sank at 1:30 in the morning. After being weather-bound at Falmouth for a week, she left harbour on January 22nd heading for Cardiff, in tow with the tug Challenge. Off Land's End the sea was too rough to continue, so both returned and anchored in the Carrick Roads. That night the barque dragged her anchors, went ashore close to the old castle and was high and dry at low water. The tugs Dragon, Marian, and Briton managed to pull her clear and get her into dry dock but as her owners were unable to pay the coast of the salvage and docking she was sold by order of a local court. Four stalwarts, prizing the tobacco on board, decided on a raid. One would engage the guard on Harlan bridge, lighting his pipe should the man come towards the brigantine, and another would keep watch for this signal. It was a dark night as the three wreckers sneaked across the dry sands; two scrambled on board the Industry, heaved a useful rope over the side and jumped down after it to coil it for taking away. Suddenly a shadowy figure appeared round the bows. Alarmed they ran away round the wreck, peered cautiously round the bows, and saw the same figure peering at them from the stern. Again they changed ends, then again, and the charade continued until the sands around the Industry resembled a ploughed field. Finally, exhausted, they decided to face their silent but apparently enrage pursuer, be he customs man or coastguard, only to be confronted with the equally worn-out third member of their foray, who had been unable to shout to them for fear of attracting the attention of the guard. She was steering southwards and he was expecting the lights to vanish behind the Land's End headlands when she suddenly altered course towards the land and he could see that she would pass very close to the cliffs beyond Sennen. His warning lights brought no apparent response, but the trawler stopped shortly afterwards, almost as if her crew had suddenly realised their danger. The coastguard sent a colleague to investigate and minutes later a red distress flare soared up from Land's End and rescue services closed in on Gamper Bay, a small rocky inlet tucked into the headland. A fresh northerly wind and frequent sharp rain squalls buffeted the coastguards and LSA men as they were assembled on the clifftop, where the air was already heavy with the stench of fuel oil. Below them lay the Jeanne Gougy, rolling and lurching as an immense ground swell swept over her decks. Parachute flares were fired, and in their glare five to six men could be seen crouched in the starboard wing of the bridge balcony. A line-carrying rocket was fired, but it fell in front of the shattered glass of the wheelhouse windows and several arms were thrust through the jagged shards, grabbing wildly at the line. Another rocket was fired, but the man ho tried to retrieve it was swept overboard and the same great wave ripped away one of the wheelhouse doors and the sea poured into the superstructure. More lines were fired, but every one fouled a wire stay which ran from the foremast to a corner of the bridge. Minutes after the sixth rocket soared across, the Jeanne Gougy crasher over on to her port side. By dawn the Jeanne Gougy lay swept by the seas, a dead ship, on her sides in a tangle of net and ropes. Hope that there might be survivors dwindled through the morning as the trawler rolled lifelessly in the surf. Sennen Lifeboat picked up a body offshore and a whirlwind helicopter stayed on the cliffs. Suddenly, at eleven o'clock, a woman on holiday who had motored over from Coverack to see the wreck, saw a hand waving weakly from the battered wheelhouse and cried "There's someone alive in there!' Though the trawler had been under water for the best part of six hours, rescue efforts were at once resumed. Another rocket line fouled the wire forestay but the LSA men were able to manoeuvre it within reach of the man in the wheelhouse who secured it but was took weak to climb into the breeches-buoy which followed. Then a second near-miracle occurred. Four bedraggled figures crawled out of the trawler forepeak, clambered up the vertical decks and hung on the guards rail, their faces upturned to the cliff. While they were being hauled to safety on ropes manoeuvred over them by the coastguards above, the helicopter returned and hovered over the wreck. A belt was let down to the man in the wheelhouse but again he was too weak to grasp it and FLT SGT Eric Smith was then lowered on to the deck, looped the strop over the man's shoulders and both were hauled up to the helicopter, which landed the man on the clifftop. Believing more men might still be trapped, FLT SGT Smith made a second descent on to the trawler and found a young boy crouched in a passage behind the bridge. He too was winched up and landed, after which the Flight Sergeant made yet a third visit to the trawler but, seeking no one and getting no reply to his shouts, he was ordered back to the helicopter. Eleven men, included the captain, lost their lives in the wreck, which was inexplicable as it was tragic. The Jeanne Gougy had left Waterford the evening before and the weather had been rough all the way across. She ran ashore during a particularly bad squall but she had been built to withstand far worse conditions. Flt Sgt Smith was awarded the George Medal for his bravery. The men he saved, as well as the four others, owed their lives to their good fortune in finding an air pocket in the hull and their tenacity in keeping themselves afloat and refusing to give up hope of survival. Owned by Frederick Ferrer of Valencia, the Juan Ferrer was only three years old and had been built in her home port of AST Neptune. Her cargo was several thousand bundles of staves, large sheets of thick plywood, and sporting shotguns. The weather was bad: a strong damp south-west wind had brought thick drizzle and occasional fierce rainstorms in from the Atlantic, and a heavy ground swell broke beneath the Lamorna Cliffs. Steadily the Juan Ferrer rolled on through the wind and rain: at 2:30 am the light of another vessel astern suddenly vanished as she ran into a thick bank of fog. Her young captain, 32-year-old Luis Ruiz, made for the radio room to contact Land's Land and establish his position. Minutes ticked by with only the crackle of static coming through, then came a cry from the deck, "Rocks Ahead!" which sent him racing topside. Right in front of the Juan Ferrer's bow towered 'great looming shapes' as the captain later described them and his shout for "Full Astern" was drowned as the coaster's elegantly flared bow smashed into a wall of granite below Carn Boscawen. Deck Cargo broke lose under the impact and, calling for all hands, the captain ran back to the radio room. At 3 am, Land's End radio picked up 'Juan Ferrer. Am ashore vicinity of Mount's Bay.' It was the only signal Captain Ruiz could send out before the sea put the generators out of action. Jose Sevillano, a 21-year-old sailor who had been hurled from his bunk by the sudden shock, reached the deck to find the ship already heeling over into the surf. Benito Nuncy, another young seaman, joined in trying to launch the lifeboats which were carried on each side of the funnel, abaft the bridge. One boat was against the rocks, so the Spaniards turned to the other. After a struggle in the wind and darkness they lowered it, but a heavy sea smashed it against the coaster's side and it was swept away. There was one other boat, a small dinghy carried in the bows, but there was no hope of reaching it over the jumbled chaos of wha had once been a neatly-stacked deck cargo. The Juan Ferrer listed until her decks were almost vertical, but the rocks were only twelve feet away and Benito Nuncy jumped overboard. He was dashed on to the rocks but managed to crawl up beyond reached of the waves: soon Jose Sevillano, Baldomero Garcia, the 19-year-old bosun and Jose Oijnaga, the 20 year-old chief engineer, also leapt overboard. Garcia vanished at once, even though he wore a life jacket like the others, and Oijnaga was swept away as he tried to get hold on the slippery granite. Jose Sevillano alone scrambled up to join Benito Nuncy on Carn Boscawen. Fifteen minutes later the gallery boy, Jose Alonso, got ashore half-naked, and the three huddled among the boulders to shelter for the wind and driving rain. They stayed there in hope that more of their shipmates had survived, although the Juan Ferrer was barely visible in the surf below. Captain Ruiz stayed with his ship until the last possible moment, when, although a non-swimmer, he leapt off the stern as the coaster rolled over beneath him. The suction dragged him down and when he surfaced it was to hear the cries of the crew around him, but they soon faded and he was left alone in the rough seas. Supported by a bundle of wooden staves from the cargo, he trod water and drifted back and forth with the current. The first streaks of dawn gave him hope, and as he rose on a wave crest he could just make out the distant shape of the Penlee lifeboat. He tried to shout and strike out towards her but his limbs were numb. Fortunately, his feeble cries were heard by two brothers, members of the Treen LSA company (another form of coastguard) who, along with every other rescue service had been searching for the Juan Ferrer since her distress call at three o'clock. The brothers signalled to the lifeboat and it closed in, hands reached down and Captain Ruiz was pulled from the sea in the last stages of exhaustion. He had been in the water for nearly four hours. The three survivors on shore had stayed near the wreck for several hours before they struck off inland across the fields, and they were met by a rescue part at seven o'clock as they wandered up a farm lane. They were hurried to the warm hospitality of a nearby farm, whilst the coastguards, LSA companies, an armada of rescue ships and a naval helicopter converged on Carn Boscawen. The Juan Ferrer lay submerged, nothing visible except the tip of her bows, rocking gently up and down with the waves swirling back and forth across the white letters of her name. Eleven of her crew had been drowned; nearly all of them young men in their early twenties. Only two were over thirty-two, and some, like the bosom, were hardly out of their teens. Months after the wreck, the cargo was found strewed over the shores form Lands End to Marazion. The goods were particularly useful for local people, who used them in a variety of ingenious ways.
