Opposite is the site of the Dry Dock, June 1909. Description An account of the resource The vessel is the Leon Bureau, a three masted sailing Schooner in Penzance floating dock. The Schooner Leon Bureau of Nantes was carrying 2,600 tons of wheat from Adelaide to Falmouth. On June 18th 1909, she hit the northern end of the rocks, tore a large hole in her bow and drifted off into the fog. The crew only just managing to hold their own with the pumps. Two naval torpedo-boats were sighted to the Seven Stones reef, but both failed to see the Leon Bureau's signal of distress, and it was not until the she entered Mount's Bay that a Trinity pilot at Newlyn noticed her plight. "On the 18th June 1909 Alfred Vingoe was returning to Penzance in his pilot boat when he noticed that a large sailing ship was lying low in the water and flying distress flags. He and his two crew members sailed over to the craft to find that the ship had been holed on a rock off the Scilly Isles and was fast taking in water. Climbing aboard Alfred told the captain to put on full sail where she was beached just outside the harbour. The cargo was discharged into smaller ships and the ship then towed into Penzance harbour to be repaired. " Even the pilot-gig was unable to catch up with the Frenchman until off Mullion, by which time there was six feet of water in the holds. Tugs came to her assistance, and at 17:15pm the Leon Bureau was beached alongside the Eastern extension pier at Falmouth. It was the end of a somewhat disastrous voyage. When off Cape Hope in March, the sea had swept away the ship's binnacle wheel, rudder, bell, and topgallant yard, in addition to breaking the bosun's leg. The following month, Francis Allard, the ship's boy, had fallen from a yard and died, and only hours before the ship struck the Crims an able seaman had fallen over the poop deck rail and fractured his ribs. The final incident occurred whilst alongside at Falmouth, when the bow anchor slipped while being catted and crushed a seaman's foot. Most of the description is taken from Richard Larn, Cornish Shipwrecks: Isles of Scilly (Newton Abbot: David & Charles, 1971), p.53-54. He left these to the Penzance (Morrab) Library with the wish that they should be published after his death (which was 27th January 1945). Also, donated was a large amount of correspondence and a family photo album. The photo album has been restored and rests safely in the Morrab Library Photographic Archive. All the photos in the album have now been scanned and can be seen here. Apart from a photograph of his father, Rev George Harpur, they are mostly images of his maternal relatives. She married Charles Henry Denny Robbs in Brigg in 1868. They had 7 children and lived in Grantham where her husband was a physician and surgeon. Title A name given to the resource Serena Wadham Archive Description An account of the resource <p>Serena Wadham (1930-2006) was a photojournalist who was based in Islington from the late 1960s until 1987, when she retired to Cornwall, spending her final years at Middle Georgia Farm, Nancledra, near St Ives. After her death her family presented a substantial collection of her negatives, contact sheets and prints, plus some press material and correspondence, to the Morrab Library in Penzance. In May 2008 an exhibition was held at the Library, curated by Robin Lenman, who has also compiled this catalogue. The bulk of the collection relates to Serena Wadham's activities in and around London. But the rest comprises Cornish themes such as early journalistic assignments, the landscape, neighbours and farming around Nancledra, and a 1990s campaign against the redevelopment of Hayle. The photographic prints have been subdivided into subject categories and are mostly stored in <strong>A4-format box files</strong>, numbered 1-18; negatives and contact prints (mostly in flat cardboard boxes, individually numbered), albums and some miscellaneous material, including larger-format items, are contained in <strong>large archival boxes</strong>, numbered I-VIII. The selection of c. 80 exhibition pictures, with mounts and captions, is held separately in an <strong>archival portfolio</strong>.</p> <p>Although some prints and contact sheets are captioned with information about subjects and people photographed, SW rarely included dates.
