Several others had lucky escapes: one in particular , a visitor to Scily named Ormrod, was actually inside the deckhouse when the steamer capsized. Wilce was en route from Swansea for St. Malo with coal. Constructed of wood in 1876, she was a sailing vessel, it was carrying a cargo of anthracite. On Tuesday 7th January at about 9.15pm during a heavy north-west gale, a vessel was seen running for the harbour, but on nearing the entrance, the vessel was driven ashore, first striking heavily on Penolva Point. At about 9.30 pm, the lifeboat James Steven was launched and proceeded to the distressed vessel, and after much difficulty succeeded in rescuing her crew, and in the teeth of the gale landed them safely in the harbour about 10.30pm. Owing to the heavy swell, the lifeboat could not be housed until 2am. Part of a lamp recovered from the wreck of the Lizzie R. Wilce was sold at auction in 2002. The Isis capsized and drove ashore while trying to reach her, and the schooner's crew were rescued by breeches-buoy. The battered Susan Elizabeth launched at Dartmouth in 185 and owned by Balkwill & Co, was sold to Joshua Daniel, coal merchant of St. Ives, and for the next twenty-five years plied the colliers trade. On October 17 1907 a NNE gale caught her off the Mumbles and, sails in tatters, she reached St. Ive only to be tossed on to Portminster Beach. Captain John Curnow, who as a boy was wrecked on board the Schooner Jasper at St. Ives in December 1874, and his crew, were saved by the lifeboat. The Susan Elizabeth's hulk menaced the seine fishery until it was dynamited in October 1909, though not before a live turtle was found on board.
