She scraped past the Land's End Cliffs, and though water was pumped into her holds to force her deeper into the sea, she drove on. By noon the Tripolitania was inside the Lizard and, knowing she was doomed, Captain Reppito called the crew on to the bridge and told them that he was going to beach on Loe Bar.  At full speed she surged up the coast, then the wheel was put hard rescue to arrive the Italians flung a roper over the bows and though the first man who slid down was swept away, twenty-seven others got safely ashore. During the next few ays the Tripolitania was driven farther up the bar sands, but she was little damaged and the work of refloating her began. Scores of labourers dug away the sand which continually built around her, coffer dams were erected and channels cut back to the sea.  Months passed, and she still remained on the bar. In August 1913 hopes of salvage were still good, but on November 4th a south-west gale and high spring tide destroyed a year's work in a night. By dawn she had wallowed her way 300 yeards further inshore and settled down even deeper; Tripolitania was launched on the Mersey in 1905 as the Drumgarth, for John Heron & Co of Liverpool. She later became the Lord Cromer, and in December 1911 passed to Luigi Pillagura of Genoa. The Minnehaha was built and registered in Belfast by Harland & Wolf I 1900. On passage from New York to Tilbury with 171 crew, 66 first class passengers, a general cargo, and 243 steers. Captain Sydney Leyland, the company's senior master mariner, had been unable to take an observation since the 14th of the month, and by noon on the 17th estimated that he was 170 miles from the Bishop Rock and would pass at least six miles south of the lighthouse without any further changes of course. Fog dictated a reduction in speed to six knots during the evening, and although a sounding taken at midnight showed forty-seven fathoms, breakers were seen ahead only minutes later, and with scarcely more than a slight bump, the liner slid gently ashore. Distress-guns fired by the Bishop Light-keepers brought out the St. Marys lifeboat, but by the time it arrived at the wreck all the passengers had been landed by pilot-gigs from Bryher. The lifeboat stood by until 3pm, when Cape Leyland ordered everyone except his officers and a few members of the crew to board a waiting tug. The Falmouth Tugs, Victor and Dragon, summoned by urgent radio signals, arrived in time to see the crew start heaving cargo out of Nos 2 and 3 holds to lighten the ship, and throwing it into the sea. Brand new motor cars were winched outboard and dropped, followed by grand pianos, crated machinery of every description, sewing machines, carpets, and other valuable items by the ton. The frightened steers joined the rest of the cargo in the sea, and assisted by the gigs whose roped the cattle alongside by their horns. At least 200 animals reached Bryher safely. A Lowestoft trawler came into St. Marys Roads with a crated motor-car on deck, having recovered it floating near the Wolf Rock. When asked what should be done with it, the Receiver of Wreck took the fishermen to the end of Hugh Town jetty and pointed out across the sound where dozens of similar crates could be seen bobbing about in the sea. By April 20th, a fleet of tugs and salvage vessels were in attendance, and the serious business of getting the ship afloat again began. The first move on the part of the Liverpool Salvage Company and the Swedish firm which was assisting them, was to build a false floor of timber in each hold at low water, caulking each seam so as to make it watertight. Other false decks were built in succession at each hatch level, so thar eventually six platforms were in positon in each hold. The air compressors were then started but for days there was little apparent result as the increasing pressure under the floors slowly pushed back the sea.  On May 11th, the Minnehaha refloated and came down so fast that she nearly ran down the waiting tugs whose assistance was not needed. The vessel was in ballast from St Nazaire to the Tyne. Ran ashore in thick fog. Built for Furness, Withy & Company of West Hartlepool in 1893, the Plympton was 314ft in length and 2, 869 tons gross was declared a total loss, her value for insurance purposes being set at 16,000 with her cargo at an additional £25,000. Her arrival was not exactly unannounced, since she steamed headlong onto the rocks with her fog siren going full blast. An old gig, the Dolly Varden, was launched from Porth Cressa and after searching around Gugh and Wingletang area, found the Plympton with her boys hard and fast ashore, listing heavily to port. After her crew of 23 had been landed, the islanders set about the age-old practise of stripping the wreck. That afternoon, whilst work was still in progress, the flood tide gently lifted the steamer off the rocks and without warning she turned right over and sank, leaving only the bow section above water. Two local men, Charles Mumford of St. Marys and Charles Hicks of St. Agnes, were sucked down by the wrecked and drowned. Several others had lucky escapes: one in particular , a visitor to Scily named Ormrod, was actually inside the deckhouse when the steamer capsized. He went down with her but managed to escape through a porthole and reached the surface still clutching his trophy, the saloon stewards dinner bell. A remarkable coincidence occurred when in 1920, a German steamer Hathor, 7060 tons gross, sank right across the wreck of the Plympton on the base of the Lethegus Rock.
