Launched of the Admiralty in November 1916 by the Tyne Shipbuilding Company of Newcastle, she remained the naval oiler Scotol until 1948 when she was bought by Hemsley Bell Ltd of Southampton, who chartered her to Shell Mex & BP LTD as the Hemsley I. Her tall buff funnel became a familiar sight in the Mersey, the Manchester Ship Canal, and many Irish seaports, as she piled the general coasting and bunkering trade with regular cargoes to Liverpool Clarence Dock power station. She was still going strong in March 1969, but next month was sold for breaking. After a rousing send-off at Liverpool she sailed on her last voyage to Antwerp scrapyard. But at 2:30am on May 12th 1969, during thick fog and a fresh southerly gale, she struck heavily under high cliffs in Fox's Cove, just west of Treyarnon Bay. Her crew jumped ashore, leaving the old Hemsley I, described by her captain as 'a happy ship' firmly entrenched at the end of her last voyage. He left these to the Penzance (Morrab) Library with the wish that they should be published after his death (which was 27th January 1945). Also, donated was a large amount of correspondence and a family photo album. The photo album has been restored and rests safely in the Morrab Library Photographic Archive. All the photos in the album have now been scanned and can be seen here. Apart from a photograph of his father, Rev George Harpur, they are mostly images of his maternal relatives. 'Florence M. Woodman Turner April 1907'. From this name we found that this lady was born in Essex in 1885, died in 1977 and was buried in Marazion cemetery. She was the daughter of Samuel Thomas Turner and Florence Maud Dennis, the latter being the daughter of Charles Dennis and Mary Woodman who lived at The Bungalow, Perran Crossroads. (Now a Chinese restaurant.) Many of the family came down from Essex to visit Charles and Mary, and later settled here themselves. They took many photos of the countryside around the area. Title A name given to the resource Lamorna Birch Family Photos Description An account of the resource A small collection of photos from the family of Samuel John 'Lamorna' Birch. 1869-1955, the founder of the colony of artists and writers who lived and worked in and around the Lamorna Valley near Penzance, Cornwall. He was born near Liverpool in 1869 and adopted the additional name of Lamorna after 1896. He was married to Houghton Emily Vivian and they had two daughters, Elizabeth Lamorna (known as Mornie) and Joan Houghton. The collection shows Lamorna with well known public figures; of himself at work; and many of his wife and children. Included are snapshots of many of his friends at social events. An excellent biography of him was written by Austin Wormleighton , 'A Painter Laureate, Lamorna Birch and his cicle'. Published by Sanson & Company. 1995.
