Title A name given to the resource Clan Malcolm, wrecked at Mulvin Rock, September 26th 1935 Description An account of the resource The 5,994-ton Clan lines steamer Clam Malcolm of Glasgow, wrecked at Green lane at 9pm on September 26th while bound from Port Natal via London to Glashow. Dense fog cloaked the headland at the time, and the coastguards were unaware of the wreck until they saw her distress rockets. Although the German tug, Seefalke, reached her in a matter of hours, the identity of the ship was not known until the Lizard lifeboat returned after eighteen hours duty. The Clan Malcolm was so badly damaged, and a salvage diver declared her a total loss. On September 30th the underwriters confirmed the loss officially, a personal tragedy for Captain Pollock, the master for whom this was a last command before retiring. On November 3rd, a south-east gale smashed deck fittings, decks, and hatch covers; she survived one night of this pounding, but began to break up the following day. Her deck was swept clean, and after a sagging deck line had showed her keel to be broken, Cadwith Cove was soon ten feet deep in wreckage. Some time later the Clan Malcolm which was launched in 1917 by Craig Taylor& Co of Stockton, was dispersed by explosives. Twenty-four hours later she passed Godrevy light which was almost hidden by thick wintry haze, and shortly before midnight grounded heavily under Pen Enys Point. In the weeks following, the Bessemer City broke up. Her poor complete with mast and cargo derricks, drifted under Trevalgan Cliff, and heavy seas demolished even the large forward and midship sections. Cases of tinned fruit and salmon, boxes of raisins, sultanas and other delicacies ripened in the California sunshine, came ashore from Clodgy to Newquay. A Penzance firm recovered a lot, but a great deal more vanished into kitchen cupboards and was put to good used during the days of scarcity that followed. Though her location was well known; the Bessemer City lay undisturbed until September 1963, when she was re-discovered by crayfish divers.
