It covers hillforts, megaliths, ancient villages, artefacts, excavations such as the Roman villa at Magor near Redruth, and Cornish cultural events such as the first Cornish Gorsedh at Boscawen-ûn in 1928. In 1935 Stanley entered a News Chronicle competition called "Britain 1935". A copy of his entry form was found attached to the back of a small print, listing his address, camera model and film type. He lived at Barncoose, Redruth, Cornwall, and used an Ensign Cameo No. 2 camera with Imperial Eclipse plates. Title A name given to the resource Lamorna Birch Family Photos Description An account of the resource A small collection of photos from the family of Samuel John 'Lamorna' Birch. 1869-1955, the founder of the colony of artists and writers who lived and worked in and around the Lamorna Valley near Penzance, Cornwall. He was born near Liverpool in 1869 and adopted the additional name of Lamorna after 1896. He was married to Houghton Emily Vivian and they had two daughters, Elizabeth Lamorna (known as Mornie) and Joan Houghton. The collection shows Lamorna with well known public figures; of himself at work; and many of his wife and children. Included are snapshots of many of his friends at social events. The Earl of Arran left Penzance about 10am bound for St Mary's with a crew of eight hands, ninety-two passengers, mail, and general cargo. The vessel was detained at Penzance beyond her normal time for sailing. On nearing the Scillies a passenger named Stephen Woodcock, who belonged to the crew of a local pilot-boat but was not himself a licensed pilot, suggested to the master that he could save time by taking a short-cut through St Martin's Neck, instead of the longer, normal passage through Crow Sound. Captain Deason replied that he knew of no such short-cut, but on Woodcock's assurance that he knew it well, agreed to let him take the packet through. No sooner had the Earl of Arran got some distance into St Martin's neck than she struck a rock, and so severe was the damage that the vessel had to be run ashore on Nornour, where she became a total loss. The passengers and the whole of the cargo were saved, but nothing could be done for the paddle-steamer and she was broken up for scrap after she broke in two. At a Board of Trade enquiry, Captain Deason was found guilty of a grave error in allowing passenger, of whose compentency he had no knowledge, to take charge of his ship, and his certificate was suspended for four months.
