The master of the ship was Master Cardwell. She wrecked on course from Caleta Buena to Falmouth with nitrates under Rill Head on May 8th 1898. Her crew rowed seawards, leaving the barque slowly settling below the cliffs, and were picked up at dawn by Falmouth pilot cutter No. 6. The Abernyte launched at Dumbarton in 1875 by Mackellar & Co, broke up in heavy ground seas during the evening. Lynch of Portland, New Brunswick, as a wooden full-rigger of 1,589 tons. Towards the end of her career she was bought by Liverpool shipowner G. Windon, who cut her down to a barque. On September 17th 1896, laden with deals and pitchpine from Sable, Savannah, she received orders from a pilot-boat off Port Lynas to discharge at Devonport dockyard. Three days later she broke away from the tug Gamecock in a gale in SSW gale suddenly increased again, driving the Alexander Yeats back to the northward of Godrevy. The storm eased towards dawn, but the deck cargo had now shifted and the ship had developed a bad list to port. Throughout the day Portreath coastguards kept a vigilant watch on her attempts to wear off the land, and at dusk, as she wallowed past under small sail, they alerted Hayle lifeboat. But both she and the St. Ives lifeboat failed to reach the crippled ship, which, just before midnight, struck heavily in high seas under Gurnard's Head. Nineteen sailors, Irish, British, and Swedish were landed by breeches-buoy though not before a near-disaster when the landward anchor of the hawser came adrift. Apart from a broken forestopmast, the Alexander Yeats was not badly damaged, and by January 1897 a squad of traction engines, the first seen in the district, were hauling her pitchpine cargo to Penzance. She had left Liverpool the previous day on her regular run to Le Havre, loaded with hides, chemicals, and Manchester goods, with a crew of twenty-nine and five saloon passengers. She struck a submerged object of the Longship Rocks, Land's End, and had be beached on Nanjizel Bay. It was the lowest tide for years as she rounded Land's End at noon on the 28th, in calm seas and easterly breeze. Suddenly she gave a slight shudder, but sailed on; a hasty inspection revealed water pouring in through the coal in the port side bunker. The pumps were started but could not cope, so Captain Marsh ran her ashore. No one was drowned, but the Balbec, which had launched on the Clyde in 1853, was a total wreck, the fourth Curnard Steamer lost on the Cornish Coast since 1857. A Trinity House steamer searched for the mysterious obstruction, but found neither reef nor sunken wreck. When she left Barry docks in July 1912 with a cargo of coal for Montevideo, Uruguay, she carried a crew of twenty-five under the command of Captain Bousefield of Ripley, Yorkshire, making his first voyage as master and accompanied by his wife and son. Montevideo was reached without special incident and after discharging her coal, Queen Margaret went on to Sydney to load wheat and sailed for Falmouth on January 17th 1913. One hundred and thirty days out, at 4:00 am on May 13th, the barque was close-hauled off the Lizard waiting for daylight to communicated with Lloyds signal station and report her arrival. As soon as visibility allowed, Captain Bousfield signalled his identity with a string of flags and was given in return a message from his owners instructing him to discharge his cargo at Limerick and then go on to Glasgow to pay off his crew. The wind being very light and variable, Captain Bousefield passed a message through Lloyd's requesting the owners' permission to engage tugs to take him clear of Land's End. While awaiting a reply to the message, which had to be relayed to London, the ship beat slowly back and forth in front of the headland and had just come about to stand westward again when she suddenly shuddered and ground to a halt. Incredulously, master and crew looked over the side to see rocks and weed only a few feet underwater. The Queen Margaret was firmly impaled on Maenheere Rock at the eastern end of the Stages Reef, less than half a mile from Polpeor and despite combined efforts of tugs from Falmouth she was still hard aground after the next high tide. On the ebb, she fell over on to her port side until her yardarms touched the water, then her four tall masts broke off and the elegant tracery of her rigging and clewed-up gull wings crashed down into the sea. Later, her long, slim hull bulged and parted under pressure of the swollen wheat and when the time came to auction off that remained of this once lovely ship, the Queen Margaret changed owners for the paltry sum of £50. Account of Wreck from Cornishman Newspaper, December 9th 1911 "Watched by hundreds of spectators, the Norwegian Barque Saluto was driven ashore close to St. Michael’s Mount on Wednesday morning, and it is likely to become a total wreck. In the teeth of one of the worst gales for a quarter of a century, the crew of thirteen all told were taken off by the Newlyn Lifeboat Elizabeth and Blanche and safely landed at that port amid scenes of great enthusiasm. The Saluto is an iron Barque and hails from Christiansund. She was commanded by Captain Olsen, and carried a crew of thirteen. She was bound from London to the West Indies in ballast. She left the Thames on November 23rd, but experienced bad weather. On Friday last, when in the Bay of Biscay, the vessel sprang a leak and matters rapidly worked towards a crisis. The water mixed with the ballast and thus choked the pumps. The leak was discovered forward on the starboard side, but despite all the efforts of the crew- who tried to plug it with a sail, white lead etc.- it was found impossible to stop it and with the pumps choked, the water rapidly rose in the hold. With the weather continuing bad, the captain recognised the danger of proceeding on his voyage and on Monday he determined to make for Falmouth. Under light sail the Saluto was in the vicinity of the Lizard on Tuesday night, but the wind then increased in velocity and it was found impossible to round the headland. The wind also changed its direction, and the Saluto was driven towards the centre of the Bay. The crew could do nothing more. The signal of distress was hoisted, and they waited patiently for help from the shore. It was in this state that the Barque was observed from Mousehole at about 9.30 on Wednesday morning. The intelligence was immediately sent to Newlyn and at 9.45 the lifeboat crew was summoned by rocket. With commendable foresight the Elizabeth and Blanche had been kept afloat, and in a few minutes Coxswain T.E.Vingoe and his crew were proceeding out of the Harbour to the rescue of the doomed ship. Some three or four of the lifeboat’s regular crew were away from Newlyn on fishing duty, but there was no difficulty in obtaining volunteers. The report of the rocket attracted to the harbour and to the sea front at Penzance a big crowd of interested spectators, who watched with intense excitement the subsequent proceedings. At the time the lifeboat left the harbour one of the fiercest gales on record in the Bay was raging from the S.W., and huge seas were running. The distressed vessel was three or four miles to the South-Eastward of Mousehole, and was rapidly drifting in the direction of Cudden. Under sails the lifeboat put out, her progress being followed with no little anxiety. At one moment she would be sent to the crest of a big wave, and the next she would be lost from view in the trough of the sea. There was no faltering and steadily and quickly she reduced the distance between herself and the Barque. Those on board the latter had observed the lifeboat’s approach, and had let go both anchors, but so violent was the gale and so great the seas that one of her cables snapped and the remaining anchor failed to hold the vessel. What actually was happening when the lifeboat had drawn alongside the Barque could not be followed by those on shore, as the vessel had reached within a couple of miles of Cudden, and vision was also obstructed by the heavy rain squalls which frequently swept over the Bay, blotting out even the Barque itself. After the lapse of a short time, however, the lifeboat was seen coming away from the Barque, and as she neared the land it was seen that her human freight had been considerably augmented. Sailing splendidly she quickly reached Newlyn where a tremendous ovation was accorded her plucky crew. The sirens of all the steam craft gave vent to a triumphant peon, and the throngs on the wharfs waved their hats and shouted enthusiastically. And let it be said the plucky lifeboat- men deserved the praise which was bestowed upon them, for on all hands it is admitted it was one of the smartest rescues ever effected in the Bay. The Times newspaper reported on 20 November 1893, 'Painful and exciting scenes were witnessed in St. Ives Bay, Cornwall, on Saturday, when three steamers which had taken shelter in the bay from the terrific gale were wrecked, and a fourth was also driven ashore...<br /><br />The captains of the Bessie and Vulture ran their steamers ashore, and, amid the cheers of excited spectators, the crews of both were saved by the coastguard and their apparatus.' The wreck came at the end of a long tramping voyage which began on June 4th, under the command of Captain James Thomas, when she sailed from South Shields with coal for Venice, and ended in the course of a voyage from Danzig to Plymouth with railway sleepers. At five o'clock on the evening of November 9th, the Bluejacket sailed from Plymouth Sound in ballast for Cardiff. The weather was thick, with a strong ESE wind, but shore lights were visible so she was kept at her full speed of ten knots. Before he went below at 9:30pm, Captain Thomas told the second mate to call him when they approached Land's End. Just before midnight the captain was roused by the tramp's engine going full astern. Even as he made for the bridge from the boiler room by an inrush of water. The Bluejacket was on the Longships and the brilliant flash of the light showed up her already listing docks. The crew, including the captain's wife, took to the boats and were picked up by the Sennen lifeboat and landed at the cove. At dawn the Bluejacket presented a startling sight, poised like a gigantic seesaw across the rocks, at the very foot of the lighthouse. Eight days after the wreck she was sold to Joseph Breen, shipbreaker of Penzance, who began to demolish her when weather and tide allowed. The Bluejacket, which had been launched in 1883 by J.L Thompson of Sunderland, as an iron screw, schooner-rigged steamer of 2,205 tons gross, was on the Longships in January 1900, when the small tug Chase used by Joseph Green dragged her anchors in a strong westerly age and was herself wrecked beneath the Land's End Hotel. The Brankelow was owned by the Brankelow Steamship Company and was built by M Pearse of Stockton in 1882. Porthleven LSA soon fired a rocket line aboard but it was mysteriously severed, a boat trying to pull ashore capsized and confusion reigned for some time. Finally her crew of twenty-nine did come ashore, except for Captain Stewart who remained on board until late afternoon, by which time the Brankelow was settling deep into the sands. Tugs and salvage gear were rushed to Gunwalloe, but a strong south-west gale on April 26th put an end to operations, and on May 9th the underwriters, via Edward Mitchell, auctioneer of Lelant, offered her for sale. Prices were ridiculous even for those days: the coal cargo, valued at £825 brought a top bid of £1 before it was withdrawn, and the Brankelow, worth £25,000 afloat, was sold at a London firm for £405. They re-sold her that evening for £840, but further storms caused her new owners to abandon hopes of refloating her, and the engines and all fittings were removed. On June 11th, again under new ownership, the now empty hulk broke up completely that autumn. She had made only one Indian voyage when she sailed from Newport on the evening of June 22nd 1894, bound for Bombay, though loaded with 600 tons of coal as an intermediary cargo for Civitavecchia. At 7:30 next evening, off Trevose Head, Captain Sherwood altered course to pass five miles off the Longship rocks, and ordered the patent log to be steamed. Two hours later Godrevy light was sighted three points off the starboard bow. It was fairly clear to seaward, but the sky was heavily overcast, and second officer Brand was unable to get a routine fix on the light because of a sudden bank of thick drizzle. Course was altered again as the Busby passed St Ives, but not until 10 p.m, when visibility was really poor, was speed reduced from nine to four knots, and then to slow ahead. At 11 p.m, Alfred Bowell, the bow lookout, saw a brief flash of light ahead as the weather suddenly improved. Captain Sherwood, believing they were nearing the Longships, ordered full speed, and warned Mr Brand to ready to take soundings. But even as he went aft to get the deep-sea lead, breakers were sighted off the port bow; the Busby was already well inside the Three Stone Oar. Captain Sherwood rang down for 'stop engines', the 'full astern', but with a low grating rumble the steamers port bilges ran over the rocks. Chief engineer Thompson blew off all steam and led the 'black gang' on deck as water poured across the stokehold plates. Everybody gathered on the bridge, and while the boats were being manned rockets were fired and flares burned. Within half an hour the coastguards had landed twelve men and a dog by breeches-buoy, the rest of the crew pulling ashore in the port lifeboat. Captain Sherwood, chief officer Thomas and Mr Brand stayed on board until 4 a.m, but there was nothing they could do to save their ships. Daylight found the Busby listing slightly to starboard, firmly held from bows to bridge and already half flooded. The Liverpool Salvage Association began work, pinning their hopes on the spring tides and continuing calm weather. To speed up the work, large square ports were cut in the sides, through which a score of local men shovelled the coal cargo overboard. Patching, pumping and shovelling continued unceasingly until, at noon on July 16th, two Falmouth tugs and a Liverpool salvage steamer reflected the Busby on the flood tide. But the salvors had not chosen their weather for such a delicate operation. A fresh north-westerly gale sent heavy seas tumbling over the Busby's low-lying decks, hurling many of the forty salvage men into the scuppers and leaving those down in the holds stunned or breathless as water cascaded through the temporary coal ports. The Busby, already drawing twenty feet, began to settle, fast, and as a salvage hands frantically got two diver out of their cumbersome suits the tugs ranged alongside. The last men to jump clear were John Nicholls and George Chirgwin, who had been at the helm, and Harry Nicholls and John Tucker, pumping hands, all of who came from Penzance. Gradually the steamers poop deck rose higher unit, with a rush of air, oil, and debris, the Busby foundered in twenty fathoms leaving only her masthead visible midway between the headland and the Three Stone Oar. This final disaster came only four dats after Captain Sherwood had been found guilty of the Board of Trade inquiry at Falmouth of not having navigated the Busby with due care and in a proper and seamanlike manner. His previous record was unblemished, the Busby being the third new steamer he had commanded for Ropners, so his certificate was suspended for only six months. The Busby lay beyond salvage, and on December 6th 1894 divers recovering valuable gear from her reported her to be in three pieces and slowly settling into the sandy bottom. She was already a week overdue at Falmouth when, nearing the Lizard, she ran into dense fog on the evening of May 23rd 1913. Her master, Captain Arthur, had earlier been able to check his position with a passing steamer and was not unduly worried until several hours had passed without sight and sound of the Lizard and St. Anthony Lighthouses. Then, at 21:30 pm it was the helmsman and not the look-out who first saw a blurred flash in the murk dead ahead. Seconds later, breakers were seen grounded on the rocks below Bass Point. Badly holed, she settled rapidly by the stern and in less than ten minutes had to be abandoned. The first distress rocket, fired from a boat by the first mate, explored almost in front of the coastguard's lookout and the Lizard and Cadgwith lifeboats were soon afloat and helping in the rescue. Next morning, when the fog lifted, the Cromdael was an awesome spectacle, poop deck under water and bows on the rocks below the high cliffs, every sail set but hanging limply from the yards in the still air. At low water, her crew boarded her and managed to recover some personal belongings and the ship's instruments. The wreck was later put up for auction but, with a ruined cargo, she was of little value apart from her sailing gear and Harris Brothers of Falmouth bought her £41, later reselling her to a third party. A week after she came ashore, the Cromdale broke up in a heavy SSW gale and very little salvage work was ever carried out on the remains.
