Description An account of the resource The last large steamer wrecked at Cape Cornwall fell to the 4,538-ton Aida Lauro of Naples. She had been launched in July 1923 by the Richardson Dock Company of Stockton as the Randor, for the Cardigan Shipping Company, and was a steel screw steamer, engined by Blair & Co, 412.7 ft long, 52 ft in beam and with a draft of 24.3 ft. She subsequently became the Welsh-owned Treharris, before being sold to Alfredo Laura of Naples early in 1937. She left Liverpool at noon on June 29 1937, bound for Hull to complete discharge of her cargo of cotton seed, linseed, and peanuts from West Africa. On the following night, off Godrevy, fine weather gave way to thick fog and at 01:00 am on July 1st she struck below Kenidjack Castle, in the same place as Malta. Fifteen of the crew, accompanied by the ship's cat, rowed themselves ashore. Forty-eights hours later the Aida Laura parted forward of the bridge, and in a week had gone. Manned by Captain Frederick Bennett of Ilfracombe, and his sons John and Arthur, she broke loose while discharging coal from Lydney alongside Smeatons Pier during a NNW gale on January 25th 1935 and leaving a trail of destruction in the crowded harbour, drifted on to Pedn Olva Point. Launched by Daniel Le Seurer of Jersey in 1867, she was the last Channel Islander in the Newfoundland Cod trade when sold in 1914. Title A name given to the resource Ocklinge, wrecked at Coverack, March 4th 1932 Description An account of the resource On March 4th 1932, the steamer Ocklinge was lost in the same place as the French Collier Gap, as there seemed no reason of weather or visibility for her to have got so far off course. She had been towed into Falmouth early the same day by the German tug Seefalke, having sheared the bolts of her rudder quadrant in a gale of Ushant whilst bound from Bilboa to Newport with Iron ore. After hurried repairs, she sailed the same day for Wales and two hours later was aground on the point, only sixty yards offshore, flooded fore and aft. Salvage started immediately and nearly 100 labourers were employed to remove the cargo. But she was never refloated, and eventually the owners, Messrs Constants of Cardiff, asked the Western Marine Company to break her up for scrap. At Lowland Point, there is still a huge propeller on the rocks, said to have come from her. The Ocklinge was the second steamer of Constant's lost off Cornwall, the Lyminge having been wrecked at Gurnard's Head on September 19th 1931. At the Board of Trade enquiry into the loss of the Ocklinge, Captain Driscoll, found guilty of making false declarations and forging documents, received a six-month prison sentence as well as having his certificate suspended for twelve months. Title A name given to the resource Omer Denise, wrecked at Coverack, September 19th 1931 Description An account of the resource The Belgian motor trawler Omer Denise went ashore on the opposite side of the Coverack Bay, at Perprean Cove. She was found next morning, stern first on the rocks, abandoned but with her engine still running. She broke up where she lay and her crew were later picked up adrift in a small boat off the Lizard. Title A name given to the resource Wreck of City of Cardiff Description An account of the resource The City of Cardiff was on passage from Dartmouth to Barry Roads in ballast when it was forced shore in heavy weather on 21 March 1912. Despite laying anchors to prevent the ship being driven further in shore under the cliffs, the cables broke and the ship ended up broadside-to. The Times newspaper reported this on 22 March 1912: 'The steamer City of Cardiff, 3,089 tons, during the strong westerly gale yesterday afternoon went ashore at Millbay, two miles south-east of Land's End, while on a voyage from Havre to Cardiff in ballast. All lives were saved by the rocket brigade who landed 23 men and two women, the wives of the Captain and the chief officer, and the latter's little child. The ship is lying under close to the cliffs on a rocky bottom.' Title A name given to the resource Wreck City of Cardiff Description An account of the resource The City of Cardiff was on passage from Dartmouth to Barry Roads in ballast when it was forced shore in heavy weather on 21 March 1912. Despite laying anchors to prevent the ship being driven further in shore under the cliffs, the cables broke and the ship ended up broadside-to. The Times newspaper reported this on 22 March 1912: 'The steamer City of Cardiff, 3,089 tons, during the strong westerly gale yesterday afternoon went ashore at Millbay, two miles south-east of Land's End, while on a voyage from Havre to Cardiff in ballast. All lives were saved by the rocket brigade who landed 23 men and two women, the wives of the Captain and the chief officer, and the latter's little child. The ship is lying under close to the cliffs on a rocky bottom.'
