Again, it was the usual 'wreck weather' for the western cliffs: hazy with heavy ground seas, the aftermath of a hard south-west gale. Shortly after one o'clock in the morning of November 1st 19148, the coastguard on watch at Treen saw the lights of a motor vessel emerge from a fierce squall of rain and head straight for the surf beating upon Pedn-e-Vounder sans. In response to the rapid blink of Aldis Lamp, she turned eastward and vanished round Logan Rock headland. Though she made no signal, either to acknowledge the warning or to ask for help, he called out Treen LSA Company and another coastguard and went down into Penberth Cove. There was no sign of the mysterious ship, but the wind was thick with the stench of fuel oil. Suddenly her saw a young man washing about in the surf and despite almost being swept away, dragged him out and carried him to a nearby cottage. Search parties began to scour the cliffs. A lifejacket marked 'ST GUENOLE-ROUEN' was pickier up on the rocks near the cove, and at dawn a vessel of about 500 tons was found bottom up beneath Gribba point, less then half a mile away. The St Guenole, a steel tar tanker owned by Cie Mar de Transport de Goudron of Rouen, bound in ballast from Nantes to Irvine on Clydside with a crew of twelve, was a total wreck. Twenty-three-year old Andre Fourcin, the sailor saved by the coastguard, was the sole survivor. The St Guenole rusted away beneath the Penberth Cliffs and the memory of the wreck slowly faded. The lifeboat, Caroline Parsons, launches in record time and rounds St Ives Head in mountainous seas. Later on, some of the crew describe the waves as being 40ft high. The lights of the stricken steamship are soon sighted, as the area is well-illuminated by car headlights and searchlights. The police and ambulance service rush to the scene, as well as hundreds of onlookers. Coxswain Thomas Cocking skilfully manoeuvres the lifeboat towards the leeward side of the steamship to gain shelter from the enormous breaking waves. He positions the Caroline Parsons alongside the Alba and all 23 of the crew climb down the pilot ladder and into the lifeboat. Once they’re onboard, Cocking tells the captain to order his men to lie down on the deck to help stabilise the lifeboat. At the mercy of the sea As the lifeboat pulls away from the steamship, a huge wave strikes her broadside on. The Caroline Parsons capsizes and 32 men are thrown into the raging seas. This terrible spectacle is witnessed by the people gathered on land, many of whom are related to members of the lifeboat crew. The Caroline Parsons is a modern lifeboat, and self-rights within seconds. Three members of the lifeboat crew cling onto the boat and stay onboard as she rolls onto an even keel. The engine won’t restart but the men help the rest of the crew and most of the shipwrecked sailors back aboard. Without the engine, the lifeboat is now at the mercy of the sea. It’s being blown towards the rocks and driven ashore. The coxswain tells the men not to jump overboard because they will be ‘dashed to pieces’. Seeing the lifeboat being driven onto the rocks prompts hundreds of onlookers to scramble down onto the beach and help rescue the men onboard. One brave man gets into the water to get a line to the lifeboat. After several attempts, he succeeds. The line is secured to the lifeboat and, one by one, the sailors and crew come along the line and make it safely ashore, dragged from the surf by the hordes of waiting rescuers. The lifeboat crew make it to shore unscathed. Captain Horvath has a broken leg, and most of the Alba’s crew are cut and badly bruised – but grateful to be alive. Five of the Alba’s crew haven't made it back to the lifeboat after the capsize and are still missing. Eventually, three bodies wash ashore but the other two are never seen again. Title A name given to the resource HMS Medea, wrecked at the Doom Bar, January 28th 1939 Description An account of the resource The only visible wreckage on the Doom Bar is the bottom tanks and plating of the minelayer HMS Medea, wrecked on January 28th 1939 during the hurricane which destroyed the Glasgow Collier Winston near Zennor. <br /><br />The 540-ton Medea, launched in 1915 by R.Dixon of Middlesborough as the 12-knot mointor M.22, later HMS Monitor, sporting an old 9.2-in gun and twelve pounder aft, was converted to a minelayer after the First World War. <br /><br />She was attached to HMS Vernon and her last service was as an instructional ship at Malta. In the late 1930s, she was condemned for breaking, but broke tow off Trovose Head while on voyage for Wales. <br /><br />Flares were burned but the Medea, hidden by the rain and spray, drove into Trebetherick in a spot completely inaccessible to the lifeboat. One man was lost overboard but three others were taken off by Breeches Buoy. The Lifeboat stood until 7am, the turned for home and was swamped off Stepper. Sidelights, rails and hatches were lost, siz batteries were cracked, and if the motor had failed there would have been a second lifeboat diaster on the Cornish coast that night. Title A name given to the resource Clan Malcolm, wrecked at Mulvin Rock, September 26th 1935 Description An account of the resource The wreck of the SS Clan Malcolm off Lizard Point in Cornwall is of particular interest to me because my grandfather Captain Lawrance Wilfrid Gibbins went on board her when he was a junior officer with the Clan Line in the 1920s. Launched in November 1917 by Craig, Taylor and Co. Ltd at Stockton-on-Tees, she had a triple-expansion steam engine and was registered at 5,994 gross tons, and in common with all Clan Line ships she was crewed by British officers and Lascar seamen. After war service from April 1917 to March 1919 she returned to commercial use, sailing on the standard Clan Line routes to and from South Africa, India and Australia. On 8 October 1921 on a voyage from Glasgow to Liverpool she collided in fog with the steamer Rowan, which sank with the loss of 20 lives. At 8 pm on 26 September 1935, while homeward bound with a cargo of maize from Port Natal and Durban via London for Glasgow, she ran aground in fog beneath the Lizard Coastguard Station, her engine room and hold quickly filling with water. The crew were taken off and landed at Cadgwith, but any hope of salvaging the ship was lost and on 4 November she broke her back - photographs taken over those days show the wreck settling until little was visible above water. In the subsequent enquiry the Master was held to blame and had his certificate suspended for a year. I dived on the Clan Malcolm with Ben Dunstan from his boat in June 2021, on a relatively calm day when the tide was just beginning to flow. The wreck lies in 12-14 m depth in the middle of the worst tidal area off the point, where the spring ebb can run at 5 knots - so it is a place to dive with great care. As the photos (including the banner image) show, masses of wreckage including much of the engine and shaft lie under dense growths of kelp that cover much of the seabed. Unlike most of the other wrecks off Lizard Point it is one where there was no loss of life, but even so it is poignant for me thinking of my grandfather and the other crew who trod her decks a century ago. Description An account of the resource Four fishermen who tragically lost their lives when their boat floundered onto rocks off Cornwall have been remembered by the descendants of those who tried to save them. Valentin-Henri Maertens, Alfonsus-Augustus Huisseune, Emilius-Julianus Dewaele and Albert-Emile Easton died when the fishing vessel the Vierge Marie, was wrecked under Tregiffian Cliffs, near Tater Du Point near St Buryan, Penzance. The four fishermen from Ostend in Belgium were part of a crew of six when the motor trawler Vierge Marie hit the rocks in heavy seas, strong winds and thick fog conditions. The incident was reported at 7.40am on January 11, 1937 by a local police officer who alerted the crew of the W&S lifeboat who launched the lifeboat from Penlee Point at 8am and steamed down the coast to the site of the wreck. A spokeswoman for Penlee Lifeboat station said the volunteers lifeboat men of the day put their own safety aside to come to the aid of the boat in atrocious weather conditions and certainly not using the modern state-of-the-art kit the team uses today. She said: "The lifeboat crew located three men in the water and hauled them onboard. They were each given mouth to mouth resuscitation - sadly, only one of the men was revived, but he died later after being landed in Newlyn. The trawler had been heading for Newlyn from the fishing grounds with a crew of six. With no sign of the remaining crew being found, the W & S returned to Newlyn, landed the three fishermen, and returned to the station at 9.30am." Description An account of the resource Wreck of Tay Craig Nine sailors were saved on a stormy day when a steamer floundered on rocks just off Penzance. It was exactly 87 years ago, in the early hours of the morning that the Taycraig, a Cornish owned but London registered steamer came a cropper when it struck Gear Rocks just off Penzance Promenade. In a strong gale of wind which sprang up suddenly, and a blinding rainstorm, the steamer was driven up on to the rocks. The steamer wrapped herself around the tall post and cage beacon of gear Rocks while en route to Newlyn to take on roadstone. Her crew were burning mattresses to attract attention. The lifeboats search lights showed that they were wearing life jackets and seeking shelter in the fire house at the forecastle head. They did manage to attract attention and the Penlee Lifeboat was launched to come to their aid. However the weather was reportedly so foul on that dreadful in January 1936, that it took the Penlee crew - who did not have the modern equipment of today - half an hour to reach the ship only over a mile away from Penlee lifeboat station. Other report said the storm was so ferocious that day that bits of the broken up ship were flung over onto the Prom. Yet the lifeboat crew did manage to reach the steamer and managed to save all nine sailors on board including one who had reportedly jumped overboard but was quickly picked up. The Tacraig eventually sank until her funnel and masts stood out of the water and could not be salvaged. A spokeswoman for Penlee Lifeboat station said: "Another January day and another meritorious rescue from our archives. Some 87 years ago today, during the early hours of 27 January 1936, the new W and S lifeboat launched from Penlee Point, Mousehole and went to the assistance of the steamer ‘Taycraig’ which had struck Gear Rocks just off Penzance Promenade. Title A name given to the resource Bessemer City, wrecked of Clodgy in October 31st 1936. Description An account of the resource The American steamer Bessemer City wrecked at Clodgy in 1936, was launched in 1921 by the Chickasaw Shipbuilding Company of Alabama for the US Steel Production Company. She was steel screw steamer of 3,450 tons net, 5,686 tons gross, powered by two steam turbines, geared to a single shaft, made the Federal Shipbuilding Company of Kearney, New Jersey. Under the ownership of the Isthmian SS Co of New York, and commanded by Captain Joseph Herman, the Bessemer City left Liverpool on the evening of October 31st 1936 for London, to complete discharging her general cargo from the USA. Twenty-four hours later she passed Godrevy light which was almost hidden by thick wintry haze, and shortly before midnight grounded heavily under Pen Enys Point. In the weeks following, the Bessemer City broke up. Her poor complete with mast and cargo derricks, drifted under Trevalgan Cliff, and heavy seas demolished even the large forward and midship sections. Cases of tinned fruit and salmon, boxes of raisins, sultanas and other delicacies ripened in the California sunshine, came ashore from Clodgy to Newquay. A Penzance firm recovered a lot, but a great deal more vanished into kitchen cupboards and was put to good used during the days of scarcity that followed. Though her location was well known; the Bessemer City lay undisturbed until September 1963, when she was re-discovered by crayfish divers. Title A name given to the resource PZ 109 Capsized Our Lizzie Description An account of the resource 'Our Lizzy PZ109 a 1st class lugger of 51 foot and 26 tons owned by Richard Worth was rammed by the Water Lily PZ146 a 1st class lugger of 38.6 foot and 18 tons owned by Richard Nicholls and Alex Bond. Our Lizzy sank off Penlee Point at 0300 hours but all the crew were picked up by the Water Lily. There was a court case regarding the lack of lights on both vessels. Our Lizzy had only a masthead light while the Water Lily had no lights at all and had just come from the Scillies fishing grounds 50 miles away. It was stated that the foremast light should be visible for 5 miles and port and starboard lights 2 miles. Charges brought by Captain Charles Chester Cartwright QBE, Nautical 7.Surveyor of the Survey Branch of the Mercantile Marine Department of the Board of Trade against both boats. Both skippers were fined £5. The Magistrate issued a warning that if any similar case came again a heavier penalty would be imposed. The Clerk of the Court, Capt C.E. Yenning, stated that the maximum penalty was £100 or not more than 6 months imprisonment.' Title A name given to the resource Submarine L1 British WW1 Submarine wreck Description An account of the resource Anyone looking for something a bit out of the ordinary on the weekend of 30/31 March 1930 got a bit of a treat at Porth Nanven. Washed ashore on Saturday 30th was the British World War One submarine L1. The Cornishman reported that the vessel was well embedded in the sand at one end while the other was “piled upon the rocks”. According to the Cornishman the sub was spotted well aground at 7.45am by Mr James Chapple of Cot Valley but people in the cove at 6am the same morning seemingly saw nothing at all. L1 had been under tow from Chatham on her way to be broken up at Cashmore's ship breaking yard in Newport. The sea around Cape Cornwall had been rough overnight on Friday/Saturday and tow broke. The tug, Eastleigh, made her way to St Ives while the submarine was washed ashore and clearly driven into the rocks as photographs show. L1 lay on the beach at Porth Nanven for some time until a team from Cashmores broke her up where she lay. The submarine was built by Vickers at Barrow-in-Furness where she was laid down on 18 May1916. She was commissioned on 18 November 1917 and joined the 6th flotilla at Portsmouth under her first skipper Lt. Cdr. R.B. Darke. The first three years of her career were spent in home waters but in 1920 she sailed for Hong Kong where she remained until at least 1923.
