Description
Britains Ocean Telegraph Cables fan out into the Atlantic from the sandy beach of Porthcurno, a Cornish cove near Land's End. These cables, which are linked with the 155,000-mile network owned by Cable & Wireless Ltd., are operated from the company's station at Porthcurno. For reasons of security, this station was moved during World War II into tunnels blasted 150-feet into the cliff side.
This photograph shows Mr C.A. Harper, Assistant Engineer, at work in the station on the local communications board. The main communications board is nearest to the camera, and the CTL fuses and alarm panel is shown between the two communications boards.
