Unmeshing pilchards in Newlyn Harbour.
This is a frequent scene - fishermen, pilchards and nets draped over two oars for ease of handling. Two older men may have come down to help (...just a thought) other luggers in the distance. Just visible appears to be the lighthouse on the end of a pier, far right, possibly South Pier, Newlyn.

Location is thought to be Gwavas Quay near the Fradgan, overlooking Newlyn Harbour. Possible South Pier in the distance which was built in 1885. Note: Gwavas Quay was one of the early vantage points before the building of the North and South Piers (1885-1895).
Estimate 1885.

Large fishing vessel landing a catch of pilchards (possibly mackerel) at North Pier, Newlyn.
The vessel looks like a visiting East Coast drifter (e.g. from Lowestoft, etc.). Some of the catch is still enmeshed in the hold and will take a while to unmesh. Onlookers are on the North Pier. The horse cart and wicker baskets help to date this scene to 1920-1925.

The end of the Old (Medieval) Pier, Newlyn
Foreground right is the end of the Old Pier in Newlyn. View is across to the new harbour road built in 1908, joining two parts of the village which became known as 'Uplong and Downlong'. They have just started building up the new walls supporting that part of Fore Street, to the left. The new section is at the bottom of Trewarveneth Street, known as North Corner. Men are working with fishing nets on the pier.

The site of the later fish market, looking across to Newlyn town before the harbour road was built in 1908. Building on the right was the Norway Ice store before the later, much bigger Iceworks built on the same site in 1907.
Ice was originally brought from Norway in large blocks.
Search on ORCH.SL.0224 for more information on the Old Ice store.
