She had been plying across the North Atlantic with migrants from Bremen to New York, via Southampton, for almost nine years. In 1875, two years after her launch, a bomb planted on board by anarchists explored prematurely in Bremen docks killing eighty-one people. Early in 1882, the Mosel was fitted with new engines and sailed for New York on August 6th. Besides the his crew of one hundred, Captain Julius Hesse had the responsibility of twenty saloon-class passengers and 600 emigrants. In addition, she carried valuable cargo, specie, mail and 400 tons of English woollen goods. At 7:30 Am on August 9th, with the first and fourth officers on the bridge, the Mosel neared the Lizard. Occasional fog-banks impaired visibility and the lookouts had nothing more than infrequent glimpses of the shore. But the ship had passed this way dozens of times before and, confident in her course, her officers held on her full cruising speed of fourteen knots. Just after 8:00 am the Mosel ran into a heavier bank of fog and ten minutes later steamed headlong into Bass Point, directly beneath Lloyd's signal station. She was so close to the cliffs the duty signalman climbed down, jumped on to the forecastle and spoke to the captain and officers in the saloon. In no immediate danger, the passengers were ordered to pack their baggage. The Falmouth tug, Rosetta, took off the bullion, mail, and some of the saloon passengers, while a proportion of the general cargo was transferred to the tugs Victor, Kimberly, and Sylph. By noon, the rising tide had flooded the engine room cutting off the steam pressure and rendered the winches useless. Soon afterwards a small fire broke out in the engine room an it was decided to abandon ship. All the passengers and crew were landed safely, the emigrants being house in the warehouse of Falmouth Dock Company. On August 11th, the Irish packet, Countess of Dublin, took the saloon passengers aboard for America, the remainder travelling on the Herman, a sister ship of the Mosel. The wreck settled lower in the sea, and at high water lay bows-on to the cliff, with the stern completely under the water. Divers sent down to examine the hull found plates torn open by the stern to about eighty feet aft, but considered the salvage was still possible. Work commenced on patching the holes but was soon stopped by ground swells, and on August 24th the Mosel broke in half. The wreck was only partially salvaged between winter gales and the greater part of it still lies below Bass Point. The Minnehaha was built and registered in Belfast by Harland & Wolf I 1900. On passage from New York to Tilbury with 171 crew, 66 first class passengers, a general cargo, and 243 steers. Captain Sydney Leyland, the company's senior master mariner, had been unable to take an observation since the 14th of the month, and by noon on the 17th estimated that he was 170 miles from the Bishop Rock and would pass at least six miles south of the lighthouse without any further changes of course. Fog dictated a reduction in speed to six knots during the evening, and although a sounding taken at midnight showed forty-seven fathoms, breakers were seen ahead only minutes later, and with scarcely more than a slight bump, the liner slid gently ashore. Distress-guns fired by the Bishop Light-keepers brought out the St. Marys lifeboat, but by the time it arrived at the wreck all the passengers had been landed by pilot-gigs from Bryher. The lifeboat stood by until 3pm, when Cape Leyland ordered everyone except his officers and a few members of the crew to board a waiting tug. The Falmouth Tugs, Victor and Dragon, summoned by urgent radio signals, arrived in time to see the crew start heaving cargo out of Nos 2 and 3 holds to lighten the ship, and throwing it into the sea. Brand new motor cars were winched outboard and dropped, followed by grand pianos, crated machinery of every description, sewing machines, carpets, and other valuable items by the ton. The frightened steers joined the rest of the cargo in the sea, and assisted by the gigs whose roped the cattle alongside by their horns. At least 200 animals reached Bryher safely. A Lowestoft trawler came into St. Marys Roads with a crated motor-car on deck, having recovered it floating near the Wolf Rock. When asked what should be done with it, the Receiver of Wreck took the fishermen to the end of Hugh Town jetty and pointed out across the sound where dozens of similar crates could be seen bobbing about in the sea. By April 20th, a fleet of tugs and salvage vessels were in attendance, and the serious business of getting the ship afloat again began. The first move on the part of the Liverpool Salvage Company and the Swedish firm which was assisting them, was to build a false floor of timber in each hold at low water, caulking each seam so as to make it watertight. Other false decks were built in succession at each hatch level, so thar eventually six platforms were in positon in each hold. The air compressors were then started but for days there was little apparent result as the increasing pressure under the floors slowly pushed back the sea.  On May 11th, the Minnehaha refloated and came down so fast that she nearly ran down the waiting tugs whose assistance was not needed. This was the wooden, 845-ton vessel, was carrying a cargo of guano. Master Jones had reached Falmouth on January 16th 1874 from Peru. It was making route to Dublin the next day to discharge goods the following day. On January 18th 1874, the vessel falsely assumed that a light seen through the murky fog was Wolf Point, but instead the vessel struck the south-east corner of Peninnis, amongst the Jolly Rocks. She went ashore with all sail set, almost on top of the tide, and thumped the rocks so hard that a large hole was made in the port bow, into which the sea poured. Within two minutes she was under water, and those who had not been swept away took to the rigging. Amid this, Captain Jones undressed in the mizzen-top and then, shouting "With God's help I will save your lives," sprang into the sea and was last seen swimming for the shore. Robert Thomas, the first mate, led the nine remaining survivors from the mizzen to the main shrouds, down the forestay and over the jib-boom onto the rocks. Shortly afterwards they met one of the islanders, Israel Pender, in Peninnis lane and told him of the Wreck. In the late 1930s, she was condemned for breaking, but broke tow off Trovose Head while on voyage for Wales.  Flares were burned but the Medea, hidden by the rain and spray, drove into Trebetherick in a spot completely inaccessible to the lifeboat. One man was lost overboard but three others were taken off by Breeches Buoy. The Lifeboat stood until 7am, the turned for home and was swamped off Stepper. Sidelights, rails and hatches were lost, siz batteries were cracked, and if the motor had failed there would have been a second lifeboat diaster on the Cornish coast that night. The 2,244-ton Malta had been launched in 1865 by G. & J. Thompson of Glasgow for the Mediterranean service of the early Cunard Line. Brig rigged with a tall funnel, she was 39tft 3 inches in beam, and 303 ft long, excluding her magnificent female figurehead. The engines were two-cylinder compounds by J. Jack & Co of Liverpool. She had left Liverpool on October 14th 1889, bound for Genoa via Falmouth, with 2,000 tons of general cargo and nineteen passengers. Hazy weather thickened off Lundy, but Captain Richard Lavis decided not to reduce speed as the elderly Malta could barely raise nine knots. It was not until nearing Land's End and having failed to sight either Trevose Head or Godrevy light that speed was reduced and the lead prepared. The Malta then idled ahead until a lookout saw breakers on the port quarter, and she slid gently ashore below the black, dripping cliffs o Kenidjack Castle Headland. At first few on board realized that they were shipwreck. No on was quite sure where they were; above the roar of the swell came a rhythmic thudding that was assumed to be a railway engine, but in reality was the sound of the stamps crushing ore at the nearby cliff-top mine of Botallack. Cottagers from St. Just, Pendeen and Botallack were converging on the headland and as the Malta's boat came in two brothers waded out to it. Like most St Just miners, Edward and William Roberts knew the coast intimately working their own boat when work underground was slack, or in the summer evenings. They made several trips piloting the heavily laden ship's boat into a narrow gully, with the seas sweeping around them and guided only by lanterns. Coastguards and other miners helped the shaken passengers up the steep cliff, and soon they were all gathered before cottage fires at St Just. The Malta was only flooded forward so the crew stayed on board but at daybreak Falmouth tugs failed to shift her. By 11am she was pounding so heavily that the crew transferred to Sennen lifeboat and the tugs. Deck gear, stores, and baggage were salvaged, but at dusk one of the Malta's boat capsized, and James Roberts , one of the six Sennen Fishermen manning her, was drowned. The following evening a hard WNW gale got up, and by dawn the Maltas masts and funnel had gone and she had split amidships. Her cargo provided the best display since the Le Landois; bolts of velveteen, calico, muslin, linen sheets, rugs, and carpets, casks of palm oil, kegs of spirits, handkerchiefs, bottles of wine and beer, and rolls of India rubber littered the coast. At a Board of Trade inquiry in November, Captain Lavis, though given an excellent character by Cunard, was found guilty of not navigating with due care and in a proper and seamanlike manner, and his certificate was suspended for three months. Wilce was en route from Swansea for St. Malo with coal. Constructed of wood in 1876, she was a sailing vessel, it was carrying a cargo of anthracite. On Tuesday 7th January at about 9.15pm during a heavy north-west gale, a vessel was seen running for the harbour, but on nearing the entrance, the vessel was driven ashore, first striking heavily on Penolva Point. At about 9.30 pm, the lifeboat James Steven was launched and proceeded to the distressed vessel, and after much difficulty succeeded in rescuing her crew, and in the teeth of the gale landed them safely in the harbour about 10.30pm. Owing to the heavy swell, the lifeboat could not be housed until 2am. Part of a lamp recovered from the wreck of the Lizzie R. Wilce was sold at auction in 2002.
