Account of Wreck from Cornishman Newspaper, December 9th 1911 "Watched by hundreds of spectators, the Norwegian Barque Saluto was driven ashore close to St. Michael’s Mount on Wednesday morning, and it is likely to become a total wreck. In the teeth of one of the worst gales for a quarter of a century, the crew of thirteen all told were taken off by the Newlyn Lifeboat Elizabeth and Blanche and safely landed at that port amid scenes of great enthusiasm. The Saluto is an iron Barque and hails from Christiansund. She was commanded by Captain Olsen, and carried a crew of thirteen. She was bound from London to the West Indies in ballast. She left the Thames on November 23rd, but experienced bad weather. On Friday last, when in the Bay of Biscay, the vessel sprang a leak and matters rapidly worked towards a crisis. The water mixed with the ballast and thus choked the pumps. The leak was discovered forward on the starboard side, but despite all the efforts of the crew- who tried to plug it with a sail, white lead etc.- it was found impossible to stop it and with the pumps choked, the water rapidly rose in the hold. With the weather continuing bad, the captain recognised the danger of proceeding on his voyage and on Monday he determined to make for Falmouth. Under light sail the Saluto was in the vicinity of the Lizard on Tuesday night, but the wind then increased in velocity and it was found impossible to round the headland. The wind also changed its direction, and the Saluto was driven towards the centre of the Bay. The crew could do nothing more. The signal of distress was hoisted, and they waited patiently for help from the shore. It was in this state that the Barque was observed from Mousehole at about 9.30 on Wednesday morning. The intelligence was immediately sent to Newlyn and at 9.45 the lifeboat crew was summoned by rocket. With commendable foresight the Elizabeth and Blanche had been kept afloat, and in a few minutes Coxswain T.E.Vingoe and his crew were proceeding out of the Harbour to the rescue of the doomed ship. Some three or four of the lifeboat’s regular crew were away from Newlyn on fishing duty, but there was no difficulty in obtaining volunteers. The report of the rocket attracted to the harbour and to the sea front at Penzance a big crowd of interested spectators, who watched with intense excitement the subsequent proceedings. At the time the lifeboat left the harbour one of the fiercest gales on record in the Bay was raging from the S.W., and huge seas were running. The distressed vessel was three or four miles to the South-Eastward of Mousehole, and was rapidly drifting in the direction of Cudden. Under sails the lifeboat put out, her progress being followed with no little anxiety. At one moment she would be sent to the crest of a big wave, and the next she would be lost from view in the trough of the sea. There was no faltering and steadily and quickly she reduced the distance between herself and the Barque. Those on board the latter had observed the lifeboat’s approach, and had let go both anchors, but so violent was the gale and so great the seas that one of her cables snapped and the remaining anchor failed to hold the vessel. What actually was happening when the lifeboat had drawn alongside the Barque could not be followed by those on shore, as the vessel had reached within a couple of miles of Cudden, and vision was also obstructed by the heavy rain squalls which frequently swept over the Bay, blotting out even the Barque itself. After the lapse of a short time, however, the lifeboat was seen coming away from the Barque, and as she neared the land it was seen that her human freight had been considerably augmented. Sailing splendidly she quickly reached Newlyn where a tremendous ovation was accorded her plucky crew. The sirens of all the steam craft gave vent to a triumphant peon, and the throngs on the wharfs waved their hats and shouted enthusiastically. And let it be said the plucky lifeboat- men deserved the praise which was bestowed upon them, for on all hands it is admitted it was one of the smartest rescues ever effected in the Bay. On October 22nd 1707, Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell, and some 2,000 officers and men of the Royal Navy met their deaths when H.M.S Association, Eagle, Romney, and Firebrand all struck the same area and went down. The Association and the Firebrand were lost on the Gilstone, the Romney sinking on the Crebinicks and the Eagle on the Crims. Returning to Portsmouth after a successful campaign in the Mediterranean, these ships were part of a fleet of twenty-one vessels, half of which were of seventy guns or more. They left Gibraltar on October 1st 1707, but a week later, after encountering gales from all points of the compass, they were hopelessly lost. So much so that the admiral called a meeting of the sailing-masters in order to hear their various opinions as to the fleet's position. Between them, it was generally agreed that the ships lay at the mouth of the English Channel, well south of the Scillies and due west of Ushant. Only one voice, that of Sir William Jumper, H.M.S Lennox, was raised in protest. He insisted that in three hours they would sight Scilly, but a majority decision was accepted and the fleet sailed on, only now the flagship Association was in the van, the lead ships La Valeur, Lennox, and Phoenix having been despatched to Falmouth for convoy duties. The great ships lumbered on, all unaware of the dangers that lay ahead. At 8 o'clock on the evening of the 22nd October, the flagship plunged straight on to the Gilstone Ledges and sank almost immediately with the greater part of her crew. She was followed closely by the others, and in quick succession the Eagle, Romney, and Firebrand all struck and went under. Of the 2,000 men aboard the wrecked ships, only twenty-six were reported as surviving. There may, in fact, have been others, since the majority of men in service were 'pressed' and would probably have seized such a heaven-sent opportunity to desert, although the advantages of desertion on eighteenth-century Scilly are doubtful and hanging would have been the punishment if they were caught. The body of Sir Cloudesley was founded washed ashore at Porth Hellick, a sandy bay on the south side of St. Marys, about seven miles from the scene of the wrecks. He was said to have been alive when found, and murdered for his valuable rings he wore, his hands being mutilated in order to remove the jewellery, after which the naked body was buried on the foreshore. Later, he was exhumed, identified, and taken to Westminster where Queen Anne ordered a state funeral. Her crew hastily abandoned ship when the stern went completely underwater, but rebounded later to collect personal belongings and some of the ships fittings. The cause of the wreck was investigated by the Board of Trade. Master, George West, blamed his chronometer for any inaccuracy of navigation , his calculations and log-book entries showing his position as being at least ten or fifteen miles west of the Bishop Light. She caught fire during the wreck and was alight for almost three days. At the time, a number of so-called tankers were either converted cargo ships/ had been built on the lines of a conventional cargo-carrying ship, with accommodation and bridge amidships. The 405ft-long Ponus was just a 'tanker' and had been built in 1902 by Russels of Port Glasgow, where she was launched as the Kennebec. She arrived at Falmouth at 7pm on November 2nd from Trinidad and as no pilot was available she was anchored three-quarters of a mile off-shore. During the night the wind increased almost to gale force and though a second anchor was dropped it fouled the first and the Ponus dragged ashore on the spit of rock between Swanpool and Gyllyngvase. Blasts on her siren and distress rockets roused most of Falmouth and hundreds flocked to the beach to watch the tug Victor trying to tow the Falmouth lifeboat round Pendennis to the rescue. But heavy seas forced them to turn back and at 10 am Captain Collins, master of the Ponus, risked lowering two of the ships boats, both of which managed to reach the shore. The master himself and the rest of the crew were rescued by the lifeboat on a second attempt. An hour later a thin trickle of smoke was seen to be rising from the ship and quickly became a thick plume. The onlookers were first amused, then alarmed to see a man appear on deck wearing nothing but a small vest. Soon discovering that he was the only man left on board., he assembled a primitive raft, threw it overboard and jumped in after it. Raft and man were swept under the stem and pinned against it and only a timely rescue by a dinghy which put off from the beach saved the life of the man in the vest. By evening, the entire midship section of the Ponus was ablaze and when the funnel collapsed the entire sky was lit by flames. At 5:30 am on November 4th a terrific explosion sent burning oil pouring out over the sea to spread along the beach in an unbroken line. Further explosions occurred as the day wore on and soon the fire had become a very real hazard to property on shore. A boat from the Ponus, somehow full of blazing oil, broke adrift and floated down to Pendennis, spreading the fire. By 7pm the ship's sides were glowing red-hot and the rising tide caused the sea around the wreck to boil and spit. The fire burnt all that night and all the next day, finally dying down on November 6th. Yet despite its severity the ship remained on the rocks, its structure virtually intact. For two years until November 1918, when a large section of the stern was cut away and taken into Falmouth docks for scrapping. The remainder was demolished by successive salvage firms and gales, but a great deal of her iron plating remains in the shallows. On some charts of the wreck of the Ponus is still marked, with the inscription "being demolished 1923." It wrecked with a cargo of zinc ore, she was bound for Gdynia, Poland, from Ireland when she went ashore less than a mile from Round Island Lighthouse, having failed to hear its fog signal. Within a week, the vessel broke in two and sank into deep water.
