Sampson Mitchell of Alma fame, hit her mainmast with the first rocket, and the exhausted, seasick Dutchmen, and a young English cabin boy fresh from training ship were landed. Captain de Grooth refused to leave until coastguards and a local doctor, who had gone out to attend a sailor prostrated with expourse and rum, showed him the wreck of the Seine. The Voorspoed, listing slightly to starboard, ebbed dry at noon, when stores, gear, clothes, and a stuffed alligator were landed by breeches-buoy. How and when the looting started was never determined, but Captain de Grooth later said, "I have been wrecked in different parts of the globe, even in the Fiji island, but never among such savages as those of Perranporth." Most of the blame fell on the Navvies working on the new GWR branch line from Chasewater to Newquay, though Perran men were seen on deck surrounded by the beach in aprons of local women. The Voorspoed, ex-Foxham, ex-Jan Derks, launched in 1892 by Neistern & Co of Martenshoek was refloated a fortnight later by the Falmouth tug Triton, but on her next voyage disappeared with all hands while bound for Newfoundland. She was on her way into Newlyn after developing engine trouble off Pendeen the previous afternoon, and there had been no warning of how close the weather had brought her to the Lamorna Cliffs until she struck on January 13th 1937. Captain Josef Lus radioed an 'SOS' but the ground swell was so bad that he had to give the order to abandon ship without waiting for rescue. As the dinghy was launched a wave overturned it: the captain and mate jumped into the sea, but engineer Hessene and deckhands Easton and Miel righted the dinghy and pulled clear, only to capsize on the point of being rescued by Penlee Lifeboat. The trawler's young cabin boy, Valentine Maartens, was missing, presumed swept overboard and drowned. The Vierge Marie rolled over to starboard a few hours after going ashore and within a day was jumbled mass of broken plating and fittings jammed beneath the cliffs at Tater Du. A farm labourer who lived near Carn Boscawen stepped from his cottage door shortly before dawn and was greeted by the thick, pungent reek of fuel oil wafting in from the sea. Buttoning his heavy waterproofs against the driving wind and rain, he picked his way across the fields and soon made out the lights of the Vierge Marie, ashore in a narrow cove just beyond Tater Du point. When he heard the shouts of the crew he wasted no time in getting to the farm where he worked, so that the news could be telephoned to Penzance. He then returned to the wreck with more men and ropes, only to see a small boat, manned by three men, capsize as the Penlee Lifeboat closed in to rescue them. They were buoyed up their lifejackets, but even so were in a bad way when they were hauled out. Artificial respiration was kept up on all three as the lifeboat sped back to Newlyn, but they died before they reached hospital. As the light grew, the men on the cliffs could see no sign of life as the trawler rolled and slewed with every wave that broke into the small cove. Unknown to them, the farm labourer's wife had been roused by a loud knocking an hour after her husband had left, and, thinking he had returned, she opened the door to be confronted by a drenched and battered stranger. In fluent English, he told her he was Captain Josef Lus and that his ship had been wrecked nearby. While the women heated kettles and fetched blankets, he staggered off into the fog again, to return ten minutes later supporting his chief mat, Gustave Vanlee, who's legs were so badly cut that he could hardly stand. She scraped past the Land's End Cliffs, and though water was pumped into her holds to force her deeper into the sea, she drove on. By noon the Tripolitania was inside the Lizard and, knowing she was doomed, Captain Reppito called the crew on to the bridge and told them that he was going to beach on Loe Bar.  At full speed she surged up the coast, then the wheel was put hard rescue to arrive the Italians flung a roper over the bows and though the first man who slid down was swept away, twenty-seven others got safely ashore. During the next few ays the Tripolitania was driven farther up the bar sands, but she was little damaged and the work of refloating her began. Scores of labourers dug away the sand which continually built around her, coffer dams were erected and channels cut back to the sea.  Months passed, and she still remained on the bar. In August 1913 hopes of salvage were still good, but on November 4th a south-west gale and high spring tide destroyed a year's work in a night. By dawn she had wallowed her way 300 yeards further inshore and settled down even deeper; Tripolitania was launched on the Mersey in 1905 as the Drumgarth, for John Heron & Co of Liverpool. She later became the Lord Cromer, and in December 1911 passed to Luigi Pillagura of Genoa. She was in tow from the Mount, where she had just unloaded coal from Runcorn to Penzance. But the tug Merlin, skippered by a local shipwright called Bernardo Speshott, failed to raise sufficient steam and allowed the schooner to drift on to the rocks. The packet Lady of the Isles towed the Torbay Lass clear, only to have her sink a few hundred yards off the reef. She was originally registered in London. On January 27th 1936, she dragged her anchors in a south-west gale and wrapped herself around the tall post-and-cage beacon which marks the Gear Rocks, just off Penzance Promenade. Her crew was rescued by the lifeboat, but the Taycraig, which was in ballast for Newlyn to load road-stone, sank until her funnel and masts stood out of the water and defied all efforts to salvage her.
